Hi my mare usually gets a bit of sunburned in the summer but i usually prevent it and never have any trouble i went away on holiday and left her with my sharer when i came back she had been burnt so i cleaned it out and put cream on left her in and it seemed ok so i put her back out. anyway we had a bit of awful weather and when i bought her in her leg was scabby and looked like mud fever this is 5 days on looking a heathier but just wondering do you think it is mud fever ? and does it take this long to heal ? and just a bit of general information on any good tips to help i have been bathing it and picking scabs off the ones in the pic are really hard and not budging. and then putting antiseptic cream on.

Should i keep her in or put her out in the dry weather she prefers to be out.

Please no nasty comments i am asking for a bit of help.

Thank you. x

Im not getting the vet out yet to give me a hugh vet bill, will do if she is not happy but there is no swelling and she is still very happy just wanted people opinion who have horses with it! thank you x

Looks very like it to me. Try and get rid of it while its not too bad. Try and get the muddy marvel 3 step pack - it has a descab lotion, disinfectant and barrier cream - works great on ours, and they suffer really badly with it. Good luck.x

Shysmum is right, it might not be right.

For what it's worth, it looks very much like it. I battled 4 months on all all 4 legs last winter.

If you call vet and he confirms, it may be worth trying homeopathy. That's how I got rid of M's eventually.

Please don't get the vet out for that - that was a rediculous bit of advice. Sorry.

It looks like cracked heels to me - sort of a kind of mud feaver. Get some hibiscrub (pharmacist) and clean out the wound using loads of cotton wool (again big cheap roll from Tescos) and remove the scabs by soaking and gently rubbing, rinse, then dry as much as you possibly can and put some nappy cream (sudocrem - get it from Tescos (baby isle)) on as a barrier x 2 per day - she will be fine soon.

My goodness all I can say is that the vets in some areas must do very very well....

My old horse used to get mud fever/cracked heels like that in the summer months - probaby caused by heavy dew and a lot of sun - 4 long white socks....

Oh and I do not work for Tescos! Go to whatever large supermarket with a pharmacists is near you. The hibiscrub by the way is great stuff and really very useful for any little cuts and grazes. You need to water it down with some warm water in a clean plastic bowl or small bucket like a supplement bucket. Soak loads of bits of cotton wool in the solution and use cotton wool as swabs liberally until the sock is gleaming and the scabs are all gone... The sudocream is excellent too as a preventative against mud fever - just rub a bit around the back of the pastern and heel before turning out every day.

Best of luck.

sure looks like the start of cracked heels to me which is likely with this change in weather, clean am and pm, fuciderm cream am, flamazine cream pm, after 5 days then fuciderm am, tetcin spray pm, if fetlock swells put on to antibiotics and carry on with deep cleaning treatment. Keep out of muddy field until sorted.

You won't need the vet if you can get on top of it.

The trouble you have at the moment with it being so wet and muddy, it will be hard.

You need to soften the scabs. I would hibiscrub twice daily and apply either baby oil or sudocrem or something to soften them. Should only be a few days before the scabs will come away completley, then continue to hibiscrub and apply sudocrem if you turning out.

My gelding came with mud fever and I rang my vet who advised this.

It cleared up within 2 weeks and he has never suffered since, which is either down to me being paraniod and his heels are always clean or we don't have the bacteria present in our soil which causes it , I like to think it;s the former :D

If you find that after doing this and the scabs do not soften and or you feel heat/swelling in the leg/s then I would call the vet.

:)

one of the mares at the yard i ride at gets mudfever, and it looks like it mildly..we use hibiscrub to clean and abit of sudacream, the mare comes in some of the day aswell
if its gets worse and start to swell i would get the vet to have alook

im sure theres some mudfever powder(cant remeber what its called) but it acts as a prevention once cleared

Sorry not read all the posts but first do you think we have had enough sun for sunburn? Has her diet changed, new grqzing etc as this could have caused an acute case of photosensivity. If sunburn it more than likley will be on the white bits with pink skin and not on the darker areas. Be sure you know what you are dealing with becasue treating for mudfever when it is sunburn can be very painful, I know, first vet daignosed mudfever and after no improvement and a very sore and angry horse second vet came out and diagnosed sunburn, we covered her up and it all cleared up. Good luck

she does get a bit of swollen legs anyway when stables but there is nothing usual here i will try all this week and weekend and then on monday of no diffrent i will ring the vet for some advise :) .. Thank you for all your fab advice.

Daisy this is what i really dont know if it is sunburned or mud fever but i think it may be mud fever.

Hopefully she will be sorted all i have done it worry.
