Is this mud fever?

Just to check I'm right...!

My boy has it on the back of his fetlocks. He's a shaggy cob with feathers. He has sore bits deep in the feather and the feathers surrounding the 'cuts' are full of scabs in the hair. Lots of them! His white feather is a yellowy colour around the sores.

I'm treating it as mud fever but another poster mentioned feather mites. I trawled google for pics but can't find any.

Its sore as he keeps lifting his leg. I'm off to buy some Lincoln Muddy Buddy Kalm Cream to apply...

Also how do I go about using pig oil and sulphur???
 
Does sound more like mud fever than mites, but also know mites are rife atm due to the heat and wet - is you cob itching/biting his legs?
 
Nope no itching or biting! It looks like mud fever to me, its just someone else mentioned feather mites (on another post) and I don't know what those symptoms look like!
 
If they have feather mites they are usually itchy. It does sound more like mud fever if he isn't itchy at all. My old cob used to suffer with reather mite and when she had them she got really itchy with it so i knew it was that and not mud fever.

In which case, I would advise to wash with Nizarol shampoo (from chemists) NOT Hibiscrub. Do not pick the scabs off either.

Dry thoroughly and then apply lots of flamazine, sudocrem or similar. The cream will soften the scabs and they will come off without causing any pain to your horse.

I would do this everyday for a few days and then every other day when it starts to clear up.
 
my mare had the exact same thing, greasy heel said the farrier, i had to completely clip out all her feather (it was devastating!) and daily hibiscrub and steriod cream perscribed by the vet... improving rapidly! x
