My Section A mare seems to come in to season Monthly, when she is in season she becomes quite Lazy but not particularly 'moody' as you would expect. She is probably less 'Marish' when she is in season!

She will also bring herself into season if (like today) we ride out with a new gelding - within minutes of him coming on to the yard she was 'squirting' all over the place.

She also freezes and presents herself to the boys

which is very annoying as well as very embarrassing

Anything I can do to stop it?

Mine gets very lethargic and extremely tarty! Not much you can do about it although I have found not turning out next door to geldings helps a bit.

I think my mare is a bit strange - whenever she is in season she falls in love with one of the mares in the field next to her! Totally obsessed! Its all very strange. I am going to see if i can get a supplement at the weekend as she is really difficult when she is in season.
I would be interested to see if anyone suggests any supplements that would be worth trying!
Sorry not much help for you tho H-C

My mare is in individual turnout and used to be turned out last year next to a native pony gelding and shetland gelding on one side and a warmblood mare on the other. Her seasons were never that noticable and I never saw her squirting or presenting herself to any horse. Bear in mind I only got her last May. This year however she is next to a big grey gelding and she has been coming into season very noticably. Including screaming at the gelding as I bring her away from him. Unfortunately at the moment there are no other paddocks she can go in but I have sectioned her paddock in two the same way the gelding's is and made sure she is always in the opposite half. I also put her on Equine America Magnitude which is a magnesium supplement and I think it is working as her seasons have been ok since.
Ooops I think this might be a long reply! Sorry!

Yes, my mare is a pain around other mares and can spot a stallion at 500 metres when in season!
In season mares can get lethargic (for obvious reasons, their body is concentrating on preparing for a potential mating), sensitive to the leg, the saddle and even to being brushed.
If it is a problem rather than just an embarrassment (ie if you are competing or she is winding up other competition horses) you could try any of the mare supplements - think the Equine America one is supposed to be good.
If these don't work, Regumate can help, but has to be prescribed by the vet at least initially, and it is very expensive.
Mares that are particularly hormonal or where it is a big problem as above - ie our mare was very nappy, squealy and resistant to the leg during her seasons last year, which could go on for 7 days or more, to the point where we would not have risked taking her to a competition for ours and others safety - you can have a marble inserted into her uterus by the vet.
This makes the mare think she is pregnant and *should* stop her coming in season - it is about 50% effective. Our mare is still squirting and squealing but is a lot more rideable and it only lasts a couple of days thankfully!
