We took on a rescue, 18yr old ex broodmare, we already have a dominant
gelding. The day after she arrived she came into season, instigating the
gelding into trying to mount her, she spent the next 7 days squirting at the
gelding over gates/fencing, he calmed down and stopped displaying. The mare
half heartedly continued winking at him but stopped moving her tail, today
16 days since she came, she would appear to be in full season again, winking,
squirting and lifting her tail, I was only brushing her tail! Doesn't want to leave pretty boy again, even for her supper.
We had another mare for 2 yrs and she never behaved like this.
Any advice gratefully received

Totally normal! She is just more receptive than other mares. Have watched one of our mares doing exactly the same today, turning for him, squirting - the lot. The other three mares aren't bothered one bit!!

She'll settle x

Yep, normal for some mares. She will settle down but you could give her some Lunar Eclipse from Simple System Feeds that may help her settle more quickly.

Thanks for your replies, she has been on a supplement since she came,
I think stroppy mare, my concern is if she winds the laddo up again, it is
not practible to seperate them long term, I can only divide the field with
electric fencing, which, if the grass is greener he trashes.
I think if he reacts the same this time, I will put him on a calmer

Had one of them where I was a student before!
She was in a herd of 26, and was the "Slapper" of the herd!
A couple of the geldings displayed and did mount her (not rigs)
But it really did no harm, the owner and yard owner were not bothered either and if she got mounted she seemed to settle a lot better. Leaving her out the herd only frustrated her.

Thanks for that, not sure it would work, just letting them get on with it,
last year my lad seriously hurt a mare, cut/bit her to bits and he's also
not a rig and he'd grazed happily with this mare for months, yet he still
reacted to her that day.
I think this mare expects to be mounted, being an ex brood mare, but
I don't want to risk him hurting her, she's 18 and a sweetheart, he's a thug,
he also gets jealous if i show her too much attention.
I will see how he is with her tomorrow, if he's lively he's going on a calmer
