Quite apart from him being a horrible man, is this an acceptable way to pts a dog, assuming it's done safely and cleanly?
I remember our neighbour shooting his dear old collie; is this any worse than getting the hunt for a horse?

I can't see that it is much different from asking the Hunt to shoot a horse. Presumably the Lab knew the game-keeper well. She recognised the smell, if not the vet.
I have to say that the day one of my Labs, who hated going to the vets, found a vet in her kitchen and was horrified, went down in Memory. He was taking stitches out when he came to vaccinate the horses, just to avoid a visit to the surgery.
We did have her pts (by vet) at home, eventually.
I think.peopke are squeamish about shooting if they've never seen it done because they are imagining a cowboys and Indians situation with the animal galloping away into the distance, rather than the calm scenario that actually happens.

It’s how the hunts dispose of their unwanted/surplus hounds. Plenty of covert anti footage around showing it happening and the corpses being tossed into a bin afterwards.

It’s not illegal and if done well is not inhumane, but the hounds are shot right by the open bins laden with corpses, which is appalling.

How many hounds are they shooting at a time?

Hounds are usually fed raw meat, so I doubt that they worry about the smell of deadstock, tbh.

Eta, When the Lab was pts at home, we let the other 6 dogs into the room to see her before she was removed from the hearth rug. They treated her more as an extension of the rug than as a dog. They made it very obvious that 'she' wasn't there any more.

There are ways and means….many of mine have been shot, some have gone to the vets and others have had a vet visit at home.

Mine traditionally started off in the house as a pup, moved to the kennels when working and then back to the house when retired.

When the time came for those I deemed it appropriate I would put on my shooting gear, pick up the game bag, friend would come to do the deed. Depending on the time of year and the dog I would leave some fillet steak or a freshly killed phezzie down the track from the house. Dog would find something it loved and go in that moment with no stress.

But dead other dogs, that they probably know/are familiar with?

Re. The article a clean shot to the head is probably the best way to go because it's instanteous and I do worry about the effect of euthanasia drugs.... Do they hurt if they stop the heart, do the animals feel disorientated or afraid, etc
Though assuming it was a pet he'd had a while the MPs actions show a lack of attachment which is unsettling to me, and that he chose to go that route instead of the vet (why? Cost saving?)

I'm probably traumatised by my Dad singing Old Shep to us on long car journeys when I was a child, but I don't think I could have that done to one of my dogs unless it was an absolute emergency. We had one of our labs pts in the back of the car at the vets rather than taking her inside. She loved car journeys, and if I left the boot door open for any length of time, I often found her in there. Not sure how I feel about it TBH. Logically it should be ok, but ethically I am just not sure.

It wouldn't be for me but I get the impression he wasn't trying to save money and the dog hated vets. If it was quick and clean I can't really see the problem.17yo old off its legs in pain.... needed the deed doing quickly I believe.
I've not had my horses shot but I've no problem with others choosing it.
I think the fact that I detest his politics doesn't make his decision wrong.

I have no issue with it if done cleanly, calmly and humanely. Not widely uncommon in older gamekeeping circles, who would usually allow the dog off lead for a walk, wait until it stops to poop and let it go then as a safe and stationary target.
I agree it sounds horrible but so long as it is done properly it is probably better than a trip to the vet. Widely done over here, most farm dogs would go this way. I wouldn't choose it for mine personally.

You may not have seen my edit but I learned that day that dogs don't care once their friend is dead.
