Apologies in advance if I sound thick!

A friend of a friend has recently bought a mare and had the vet to check her out as she was blowing during faster work. The vet has told her that the mare is in foal and due December at the latest!
Is it possible for the mare to have conceived in January?!

Some mares do have seasons throughout the year although it isn't common. TB mares are kept under lights to force them into season early to have early foals. Is it possible the mare could have been imported at all? Where did your friend get her from? I suppose you have absolutely no idea what the foal could be by either?

Yes, it's entirely possible. Esp. if she was kept in a comp environment all winter - i.e. warm, well lit, well fed etc..... Doesn't have to be a Southern Hemisphere bred horse..... We've had plenty of posts on HHO in the past of people who have bought mares, who have produced miracle babies and bizarre times of year - a fair few of these mares seemed to be off the hills or from Ireland......

My 'gelding' regularly see's to my mares throughout the year. Last Januray one of the local farmers asked me how old my stallion was..eekk
