Is this realistic? price for a horse

to find a half decent horse for less than 1200?

ive just advertised my mare and foal and hoping they wont take too long to sell. after, id like to look for a horse for basic hacking and probably hunting over the winter. but 1200 will be my max i expect, im really itching to get riding again, and i think the things i want to do this year is unfair to ask cj (just turned 3) to do them at his age, and to be fair, i think he still needs to grow up a bit more, before being thrown into full time work.

i dont want anything flash, or particuarly talented, and wouldnt mind something that needs schooling and bringing on, but must 14.1 plus, be able to hack alone and in company, and be good with other horses. id consider and older horse too.

think im asking too much?
 
hmmm, maybe, trouble is with tb's is that i dont have stabling so it would need to live out all year round. if i found one that would and wasnt gonna cost me an arm and two legs to keep through the winter id definately consider it
 
I think you'd be lucky to get something sound and useful for that money unfortunately.

A friend of mine recently bought a 14.1 18 yr old pony for light hacking for £1,000, but he has DJD in both front coffin joints and has to be on Newmarket Joint Supplement. He's sound at the moment, but could never do more than light hacking - definitely no hunting.
 
Maybe an x-racer or something much older. If you wern't set on hunting you would maybe have more luck seeking a loan of a light-hack horse. Lots of people do look to loan out horses that are light riding only in order to afford a new competition horse.

I think if you could even get your budget to £1500 you'd have more luck.
 
plenty of reasonably priced horses around, so, no, i dont think youre asking too much

might depend on where you are though, isnt the south more expensive for most things inc. horses? ive come up north and it certainly seems cheaper to me!

also, waht you are willing to take on has a big bearing on price

i should ask around your area too, as many horses arent actually advertised for sale but change hands through word of mouth, someone might have an animal needing a good home rather than a big price tag.

i know ive had some ridiculously cheap/free horses that have been fantastic animals
 
if i could get what im asking for my mare and foal, in about a month i could maybe bump it up to 1500, but have to allow for transport too, i have use of a box but its the fuel, so cant really go further than sussex really (im in kent) ive asked around too.

my friend picke dup a nice 16.2 gelding that was 19 as a hack and local jumping, for 500 including tack, and hes lovely.
 
I'd think this through a bit more carefully before you take the plunge hun. No stable + cheap TB could be a recipe for disaster. If foot or leg problems arose - as they do all too often with TBs - how would you manage him? If he got mega mud fever or dropped condition in a hideously cold, wet winter how would you help him? Why not just sell the foal and keep the mare? Or find a loan horse for the next year while your youngster grows up a bit more?
