Always say my gelding is chestnut skewbald however his summer coat is the most unusual colour in reality.

He has dark chestnut, light chestnut, black and some white hairs all mixed together - it gives him a sort of brindle or agouti appearance.

Is this usual for chestnuts as we dont have any others on the yard for me to compare him to.

Here is a video of his neck - notice the different colouration, light and dark patches.
His side patch is more normal chestnut but you can see a few spots of light and dark if you look carefully.

Any ideas?

Do his ears have black tips/edges?

I would say that he is chestnut rather than black based in colour (from looking at your video and signature). What colours are his parents?

He could have bend-or spots or birdcatcher spots on top of his chestnut base. My chestnut mare has white flecks and a couple of white rough-edged spots in her coat because she has the sabino gene.

no black tips on his ears but he does have darker brown colour on the back of them.

What gets me is your photo other than the white patch the colour seems very even and 'chestnutty'! however my lad is a complete mix of coloured hairs - very odd.

Yes, she's a proper orange chestnut. :) However, at the last yard there were five chestnuts and they were all different shades. Some were even in their colour and some weren't, one was also a flaxen chestnut.

^ this pally has bend-or spots

I just wanted to add, remember that there are only two base colours (chestnut and black).

He is definitely chestnut, he is almost identical colour to my lad and is chestnut.
Is he sabino? Looks like he maybe. My lad has huge variation in his coat colour , especially depending on the season, from almost palomino as in my siggy to liver. I think they have a greater variants to their coats than other colours.

i hadnt considered sabino but just read the description for it and actually he does have roan patches where he has colour and the white blaze goes over his nose and under his chin.
Thinking about it his dam had roan patches where her bay markings met her white markings. She also had a white spot under her chin (only other white on her face was a small lightning bolt on her forehead). In the little bit of colour she had along her topline his dam also had a dorsal stripe.
