Well I started my job yesterday escorting rides. I was really quite excited and got all my waterproofs on and headed off....

On arrival I fed all the horses - there is about 35 of them!! I then poo picked for three hours, sorted out the muck heap, brushed down the barns and brushed down ponies/horses for the pm rides. I then had my lunch.....on returning I was then instructed that I would be leading a smaller rider out on the hack - which was actually 5 miles, while everyone else rode!

Not only did I find this a little odd as I knew there were lots of horses I could ride who were gentle and slow, but it also felt a little humilating....I also thought with all the work I had done it might have been a nice pick up...

It chucked it down with rain and while four of the other riders took off for a canter I was made to walk slowly behind wading through mud up to my knees!

Im not moaning cause Im pretty tough and have done dogs body jobs in the past and enjoyed them, but the person got me to ride before she employed me and was quite happy with my ability. It was also made clear that I would be taking out rides as she couldnt ride for long periods anymore. I was told at the end that while she went out escorting rides I would make up all 35 feeds for the next day....

Im just wondering if this is right...? Im kinda thinking that she is changing what she originally said to me....She seems to have alot of volunteers who come along and ride out with children but dont do any of the hard jobs which unfortunately seemed to be left for me to do....!!

What would you do...carry on as im going to get mighty fit and I am outside which is nice...I ache today!! or say this is not what you originally said I would be doing....or just quit...??

I have another job to help me along as its only meant to fit in while im at uni and through the holiday period....
I just dont want to be taken advantage of!

I'd wait a while. Aside from the weather, it's quite nice to walk for a couple of hours. It may be that the child's mother wants someone on foot, rather than horseback, to have more control. It does sound like you were made to work hard, but give it a few days - she may not realise that you're being given too much and as you say, it's not for ever. Just think of your new waistline and say goodbye to those bingo wings!!

It can be really hard working with horses, and if she said you could ride out I'm sure you'll be able to. If she needed someone on the ground though, she does pay you do do the work she want's doing and the riding is a bonus because you enjoy it - if she said you could make the feeds every day and then hadn't asked you to, I'm sure you wouldn't mind too much

. I don't think it's fair to expect to be able to ride every day without fail. I'm sure if you stick it out you'll get to do some riding.

I think being a groom is a dogsbody type of job, no matter how glamorous people think it is! Unless you're employed to exercise horses, which is slightly better (but then you get put on all the nutcases while YO prances round on schoolmasters

But are you being paid?
If so , thats why the volunteers get the riding and nicer jobs..

maybe shes testing you to see if you can deal with the hard work?
