Hi question in title! This isn't an add so no one tell me off please :)
I may have to sell my mare. Would prefer loan but worried in case she comes bk and I couldn't afford her.
Basically me and my boyfriend desperatly want to live together, we have been together 6 years and feel now is the time. But I can't afford to keep my mare and move out so all the time Iv got her I'm stuck!
She has a few issues though! Not the easiest of rides, 17hh so not small!, 15years and bad sweet itch.
Would anyone actually want her? Obviously price isn't an issue just want a good home not being passed about. What's the Market like?!!
Ta guys x

Thing is, a slightly older difficult ride may well find a home, someone with a lesser budget might get a bargain but if you have very little budget for buying your unlikely to want something with an expensive condition to treat.

Thing is you can only market her and see...

(also, surely moving in with OH the cost of living is halved? I can only afford my horse as OH and I moved in together so my costs halved!)

I wouldn't buy a 15 year old 17 hander with sweet itch, but someone might if she has plenty of positive points.

Why don't you just advertise and see what response you get? If you would be prepared to offer a trial and put that in the advert, you might get more interest as a lot of sellers won't do trials but many buyers would like them.

Not if she's moving in from her parents....

OP, you will sell, but to be honest, I would advertise her cheap and be prepared to almost give her away....

Thanks guys. Not easiest ride as in she will hack alone and company but is spooky especially on roads. She has been known to rear too. She is lovely on the ground and not mareish at all. But if I almost give her away/ v cheap where will she end up :( and we are both living with our parents so costs will b more not less x

I'm not saying advertise her for free - advertise her cheaply enough to get interest, but be prepared that when you tell people about her, they will knock you down even further. You can still check out where she is going and if not happy, don't let her go there, but it's worth a go - I know a few people who have had to sell stunning horses recently for next to nothing, but they have gone to nice homes - not everyone out there is bad - use your instinct and judgement.

I would look to sell her cheaply...but high enough of a price that she wouldnt attract the wrong buyer.

At 17hh is she up to height and weight? You may find a nice gentleman who would like a light hack but needs the height. Selling with Tack and rugs will help too.

The sweet itch is always going to be a problem. Perhaps get her into a really good routine managing it...and include a fly rug/ boett in the price.

I would advertise her at £995 with tack and rugs saying "good home more important than price" and see what response you get.

Just make sure you know what the meat price for her size/weight would be and make sure you say a couple of hundred above it!

one more thing, does it say 17hh on her passport? If not perhaps advertise her as 16.3hh

The mental block of a 17hh horse may put some off.

She is up to weight yes looking lovely. She has a Rambo sweet itchhoody on in day qnd cheapy one in stable. This manages it fine it's just without shes terrible! So far no rubbing with rugs on 24/7. It does say 16.3 on her passport actually. Thanks guys x

Just to give you an idea - meat price is 50p/kg, so, if she's a heavy sort, she'd would make about £400.

Weigh tapes don't give a very accurate weight, especially with big horses, they always weigh more than you think.

Have you posted this on the wrong thread?? I think if you read it, the OP hasn't even considered what you are suggesting. I think she's trying to find a home for it if she can......

Holly Hocks I think that reply was to make sure the horse isn't sold below meat value. Not an insensitive response just trying to help the horse not being sold for meat money.

That poster is giving an idea of what price someone would put on her to make sure that the OP sells her for a couple of hundred more therefore aiming to secure her future.

Yes I think that's what she was doing :) I didn't no the price so if I advertise at 995 as someone suggested she wont go for meat. So does 995 tack n rugs sound ok x

Sound yes. She can b a bit lazy to start with in the school but once warmed up goes nice. Snafflle mouth. Loves jumping. Bit rusty but forward going and willing x

What is her confo like? Would she stand up to hunting, I know she is older but has she hunted before? There is always a demand for a nice looking good hunter. £995 sounds very realistic.

Confo im not too clued up on but she seems ok to me. She hasn't hunted with me but seems quite brave so can't c why not x

How is she at competitions?

How well schooled is she, and how high can she jump [at home, and out competing]?

Comps Iv only been to one with her, she fine on show ground. Her jumping is rusty but biggest Iv gone is about 4 ft but I'm a wuss :) x

Please have a look at this website:
http://www.equinerescueandrehoming.info/

Contact them and they will help you rehome your horse from your current yard. They retain ownership so the loaner cannot sell on and if the loaner changes their minds the organisation will find your horse another new home and so on.
The horses do not go for free - the loaner pays a donation and travel costs.
I have seen naughty ex-racehorses with serious tendon injuries etc. be successfully rehomed through this site so a touch of sweet itch and a few spooks will not be a problem.
Good luck and let us know how it goes
x

I don't think that sweet itch that is easily managed with rugs is bad. I've sold one like that before without it making a difference to the price. Just put that it is easily managed with rugs in the advert.

I can't see why it wouldn't be sellable. I personally wouldn't be put off by sweet-itch, loaned a pony that was 24 & had it very bad & even the fact that we'd never dealt with it before wasn't a problem. It was bad enough that I left him for a week in care of my Aunt for a week & I came back to him being almost mane-less, when before I left I'd been putting anti-fly cream on once/twice a day & he'd been doing alright...

If it's manageable with just rugs then I don't think its hard, mine used destroy! any rug you put him in  silly pony.

I would put her up as 16.3hh if thats what her passport states, as others say doesn't sound as big as 17hh does!

The ERR site only loan your horse out, they get the adoption fee. If you want to loan the horse out then you are better to do it yourself, download a good contract from the BHS site. If you put an advert on project horses or equine adverts you will get replies and can check them out yourself rather than leave it to others whose standards may actually not be as good as yours.
