Hello Guys

I live in West yorkshire and keep my 13.3 pony on DIY livery at a large equestrian centre. The thing is, in my opinion, its flippin pricey and I just wanted to see what you guys thought of this.

I pay £40 per week for my box, turnout, and all the haylage my pony can eat - this is DIY remember and if I want my pony turning out its £2.50 and then another £2.50 to bring them in. This price does not include bedding or use of arena/school. You pay £18 per week for the arena hire - and thats all you can have or its £8 for one session in the arena. Bedding is £2.50 for straw and £5 for shavings and you have to buy them of them and cant get them from anywhere else!

So for DIY for my pony its £40 + £18 + £10 (bedding) = £68 for DIY per week!

The yard is BHS approved and I do like it, as its all indoors. the yard is kept really clean and is not like a run down scrap yard but I think for a northern yard its alot? Plus the arenas are nearly always booked up with the riding school or pony club or shows etc!!

I am really fed up!!

Comments please!!! Thanks

V. expensive IMO I was on a great livery yard indoor and outdoor big boxes, great hacking etc etc £35 a week for box and field inc haylage and straw (if you wanted 2 use shavings they deducted £2.50 a week) £1bring in and £1 turnout free use of facilities. very clean yard all indoor

well to put that in purspective, i live down south and pay £300 a month for TWO horses on DIY (but its not a riding school). That includes the following:

floodlite all weather menage to use whenver you want
'jump for joy' showjumps
individual turnout paddocks for my two horses (one each)
lorry parking
as much haylage as i want for both horses
all off road hacking
help from YO for free if needed

The only thing it dosent include is my feed (obviosly) and bedding as i choose to buy in my own dust extracted shavings.

Per week?! That is incredibly expensive imo, I keep 2 horses DIY on a rented yard all to myself for less than that! OK so I have to arrange muck truck, hay deliveries and going on holiday is err difficult, BUT I can use my school whenever I like, everything stays where I put it, I can be as tidy or messy as I please and come and go when I want. Wouldn't have it any other way!

Blimey - that is expensive! Local good DIY to me is £25.00 per week. This is good stable plus good grazing. You have to buy your own straw or shavings. Straw is 60p to £1.00 per bale (where do your yard get £2.50 from??), shavings are approx £6.00 per bale. You have to buy your own hay/haylage, but hay is £2.00 per bale and haylage £5.00. Use of the arena is free. If you want your horse turned out/brought in, it costs £1.00 per time. Another yard to me which doesn't have a school and although is nice, isn't quite as good, charges £10 - £12 per week DIY. I think you are being charged way too much.

I know !!! The £18 is stupid isnt it? Thats the thing I am most annoyed about! And its £22 per week for arena hire if you only have it for 6 months, £18 for 12 months!!! It really annoys me - its a good yard but they think they are world class and WE owe them!!! I dont know who I could go to about it - surely that can charge what the want but I just feel its black mail - as what if your horse is unsuitable to hack out on, i.e unbroken etc - you have no choice!!

personally I think that is a bit steep to saythe least- but do you feel comfortable leaving your horses their at night? If you do then thats a rare thing in my experience-
I have had some terrible yards- that I would literally drive away in tears.
Luckily I now am on a friends private yard with just mine and her horses - I feel for you.

Plus - It gets better ......

£5 per week trailer hire
£5 for attending the vet for you
£5 for attending the farrier

Private lessons are still 18 per half hour!!

Plus the YO has put up three x-country style jumps made out of blue barrels - they are on a bit of spare land they have - and Guess what - HE IS CHARGING TO USE THEM !!!

If the yard is run well and your horse is happy and safe then this is a reasonable amount to pay.

The fact it is a BHS approved yard means that it is audited (inspected) once a year and any issues are then brought to the attention of the owners who have to correct them within a specified period of time.

Indoor arenas are very expensive to run as they are rated and then their is the maintenance and electricity.

I think you have a good deal especially if the yard is well maintained and kept cleen and tidy.

That is quite expensive! Im also in westyorkshire and my YO recieves £100pcm for my livery which includes a stable, turnout, use of arena and box parking. She will also help me out for free if I ask her.
I pay for all my feed and bedding so I am able to shop around and buy what I like.

I know but the yard has a huge problem with stupid parents letting there little kids run riot around the yard - there have been some close near misses latley - I have complained and things did improve but its has slipped back again - they just seem to want to make money at the mo - although I will say that the security on the yard is top notch and I never worry about my pony.

It is expensive, but then you get what you pay for! Depends if you want to stay somewhere nice where they have all the facilities. I've just moved to my own yard, much cheaper, but without all the facilites of a big yard.

We are in West yorkshire, and we pay £20 a week diy, includes bedding ( straw) and Hay, we have a outdoor arena, plus a xc course, and loads of off road riding,
horses are out in same sex fields, and its 75 pence per week extra to keep your box there, 50 pence for a trailer !
and its a fantastic yard, we love it,

We pay £30 a week for - fields, stable, school, horsewalker. Supply own hay, bedding and feed. £1 for school lights - lasts 1hr on meter. £5 a week for boxes and trailers. Too me it seems too much

I pay £25 a week for all year turn out in individual paddocks, stable, and use of floodlit school (40x40) lorry/trailer parking and 24hr supervision.

IMO, the price mentioned by OP is extortionate. The most expensive DIY yard around us is £40 a week including use of school, feed and free use of XC course used by Lucinda Green in clinics!

Hello

I know - I am really sad because all of the other DIY yards around are dirty scrap yards and the other yards are full livery only and I just dont like the idea of full livery (no offence to anyone on it) I have asked about for other options but dont know what to do? :-(

Its seems expensive in terms of DIY. However, you say its on a large equestrian centre. In my expeirience, all my local large equestrian centres charge around the same. In fact one is just about to put its prices up to £45 per week, this includes limited grazing and stable. It does not include any extras such as bedding or feed of any description or use of the school.

We pay £300 a month for our three horses. This includes bedding, haylage, a space in the tack room, use of the barn, the lunging pen and the arena. We have two stables - The littlun is out 24 hours. Oh yes, it's DIY, it costs £1 to have a horse turned out and rugs done ect, and the same to bring it in. It costs 50p to have your horse checked on while he's in his field.

thats a ridiculous amount. my DIY livery costs 32.25 a week and thats just turnout, stable and use of the school -no bedding or any thing else!

hmm very expensive I thnk! Im in the north too, I keep mine atmy friends yard and my livery now for 2 horses per month is £90 !

That includes 2 stables, unlimited turnout, unlimited use of the school and XC jumps, use of tack room, feed barn etc.

broken down its 100 per month per horse which is 25 a week - expensive but not THAT expensive.

i was paying 32 a week for stable, turnout and everything was on top. plus cost od turnouts/fetchins etc

That is expensive. I Only have a field but its 6 acreas split in two. I have 2 horses on and a pony for £20pw. The yard next door has stabling and a brand new school and show jumps. Thye pay £25pw in the summer and £25 pw in the winter including hay thats in Newcastle.

PM me and i will let you know the details x

If the other yards in the area are full livery, but at a comparable price to yours, (which in my opinion is horrendously expensive), could you not go to a full livery yard but do more of the work yourself..... Im sure no one would complain about getting the money and not doing the work..... certainly they wouldnt at my yard (although its a mixed yard and i am DIY)
