When my horse walks out of the shelter, i have noticed he sometimes is very stiff on his back legs. He holds them up higher when he walks away. My first thought is 'oh my god what has he done' and then after a few steps he is fine.

Help!

This is probably why your vet wants to come out and do a lameness examination. If this is the same horse that is bucking when mounted I really think you need to get the vet to look at it like they suggested.

OK.

It could be locking stifles. Does it look like he can't bend his legs? This tends to free off after a few steps.

I would suggest having the vet look at him. Usually they just advise a joint supplement and as much turnout as possible.

he will sometimes just ''jult'' on the spot with his back legs if that makes sense? or collapse might be a better word to use (not literally though!)

i'm not sure if it's that he cant move his back legs but he just walks out with a overexagerated step of the hind legs and will sometimes then hold each one up for a second or two.
