Share horsey is on part livery and I've found him turned out with a(n ordinary nylon) head collar on the last couple times I've brought him in. Mentioned it to the YM today who said that they were doing it whilst TO is on alternate days in a big field in case the horses are charging around.

Now share horsey will usually come if you call his name and I typically don't even put a head collar on until we get to somewhere with machinery/other horses where I might need emergency control because he will just follow me if asked. He is good about putting his nose into a collar when you want him to though.

So, I'm basically really cross abt the yard doing something I see as dangerous and totally unnecessary. I haven't spoken to his owner again since mentioning it at the yard but I know she wasn't keen on ruining a new leather head collar by leaving him out in it.

Should I
- buy him a field safe head collar (how safe are they really?) and confiscate all others (downside: expense & time as I'm not near any equestrian shops)
- insist that he is turned out 'naked'? (downside: might cause bad feeling on an o/wise v nice yard)

Owner (who obviously I'll clear it with) is busy, other sharer, who knows the yard better is away atm so either way I'll probs have to be the one to sort it out...

Yes get a field safe headcollar..... they are safe IMO. I turn all mine out without but if a YO insisted on it for any reason I wouldn't have a problem as long as it was a field safe one.

field safe headcollars are safe in my experience. Safe enough for boistorous boys to shred them when they are playing!

have you got a 2nd hand tack shop nearby? or ebay. Your owner's brand new leather one won't snap easily enough in my opinion. A second hand one or a cheap foreign leather one would do the job much better and cost much less :)

LMAO!!!!!!!!!! I have just noticed that my mare has a headcollar on in my sig!!!!! :D :o They were out to play in the snow for half an hour with me watching them on this occasion...I promise!! :D

Thanks everyone. Expect to see a post shortly on where to find a nice purple (owner's choice for all his other things) field safe one!
:-)

LOL... I saw that too when I was reading your post, as I thought you were going to say they always get turned out in one, (after seeing the pic literally straight away on reading your post) and then when you said you didn't I thought how funny, typical eh!
