Is travelling 25 miles to a loan horse a bad idea?

Well there someone 25miles away with lot's of horses to loan out for £30-50 a week, basically on full livery but with just you riding it. It's a long way and quite expensive! I'm just wondering if it's a seriously bad idea? I am getting a bit bored of riding lessons once a week and you can also show these horse if you want to.

Is anyone elses horses 30mins away? I'm really debating whether to do it or not. (And it's not like I have to muck it out in the morning/evening as the man does it)

Rather than worry about the distance I would worry about why it is so cheap !
Free horse, possibility of competing, full livery all done for you. Sole use. All for £ 30 ?

It's a riding school as well. The guy just has horses he loans out aswell. It's quite a good business as he doesn't pay livery (because he owns it) and we have to pay insurance of the horse too.

Here is a link I just found, though my friend enquired about it so we know the other details.

But do you guys not think it is to far to travel?

I'd personally look into a privately owner share horse nearer to home.

25 miles each way is pretty far, my old yard was 15 miles each way and I struggled with the distance and traffic. My new yard is about the same distance, but if traffic is bad I can hop across on a car ferry which takes me from my house to the horses in 15 mins.

25 miles, you're looking at at least 45 mins if not more, think about how much petrol that will use as well. With my old share horse I was going through a tank of petrol every week (£30) and was only going up to see her 4 days a week.

I dont think its too far to travel so long as you can afford petrol easily and have the time to do it.

It says in the advert though that he brings on to sell, i would question if you are infact riding and getting the horses fit for him to say 3 months down the line- this one has to be sold but we have another one you can loan.....

I have looked for a private loan for a long time now. I have put adverts up in the paper/tack shops. I found one and she wanted a very experienced rider...which isn't me!

The petrol along with the cost of the horse is probably going to be to much.

I so wanted this to work out.

As long I don't get a "problem horse" I don't think a variety would be too bad. At least if I fall in love with the horse I am riding I would be able to buy it!

In an email he did say "we always have horses coming and going so there should be somthing suitable for you." So I'm unsure whether that means if he is loaning them out he keeps them on loan to you untill you are done with it, or whether he will sell whenever he wants. I will go and ask.

What a canny man.

He is a dealer who is getting other people to exercise and bring on horses for him, and getting them to pay for the privilege. He then sells these horses for profit and gets the rider to do it all again.

What a great idea - wish I had thought of it! Good way to make money from both sides of the deal.

It would be too far for me, George used to be 12miles away and that was far enough. I don't know if you work but a 50mile round trip every evening is going to be tough, not to mention the fuel and wear and tear on your car. Don't want to put you off, I would just do the trip a few times and see what you think.

Yeah I work, but only in the evenings as I'm 18 so still in college. I will have to try it and see how it goes!

It's well worth a try! getting a horse of full livery for even £50 a week is great value. My loan is that far away (25 miles) and he is on DIY, however my YO is so so nice she puts him out for me if I help her in other ways. I also pay £30 a week for him.
Also if he/she is on full livery then maybe you dont need to go every day if you don't want to!

I'm glad soemone else does it! I was beginning to go off the idea.

Do you find the journey is OK, do you get sick of it?

I don't think it's too far, it's on full livery so it's not like you're having to go before and after work to do all the stable chores. If you're only paying £30 a week that's probably what you would pay for 1 -2 riding lessons.
You could always give it a go and if you don't like the set up, or it proves to be too far then just pack it in.
Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

I have found a potential loan horse only 4 miles away!

She is 12.3hh though so I'm a little worried I'll look a bit stupid!

How tall/heavy are you and what would you want to do with the horse/pony?

I'm 5ft 3 and 7 stone, the owner said I should be fine on her though. (Do you think I'll be OK?) I just want to mainly hack out whenever I want! I want to start jumping, but if I'm to tall to jump her I will just keep going to my riding school for that.
