Hello guys

My pony is on share at the moment and has been for five months now to an angel of a teenager whom me and my pony both adore. For six days per week I charge the girl £100 a month and this includes EVERYTHING - vets bills, shoes, I pay for all extras and have pony for one day which I am really flexible about, pony is also on part livery so all sharer does is muck out and thats it - I also have a written agreement that I fully understand that people get ill or have last minute things they need to attend to so that the lass only has to give me 6 hours notice if she cant get up to the yard etc ... the facilities are great for sharer - good arena - tons of off road hacking. We are both are really happy with the set up only at the yard yesterday someone said I was ripping her off and someone else said I should be charging her more? (overall inc all bills for pony its 280 a month) I dont intend to change the price at all - as I think its fair but wondered what others thought? Also the lass can take her to shows/rides - I take her to shows I go to and to the big hacks we go on that we have to drive to etc, also the pony is super safe and tons of fun so its not like she needs working or schooling? So what do people think? Thanks

I am so lucky to say that I have found a great sharer - she and her family (who are non horsey) really are wonderful x

Sounds like a bargain to me

No I don't think so at all. But at the end of the day if both of you are happy with the arrangement, just ignore what other people say.

Well - no it doesnt matter - I just wanted to gage what people who have sharers charge thats all, as it was and interesting and friendly debate that me and a few other liveries were having the other day.

I know the riding school charge 35 per week and they limit you to what you can do with the horse esp if you are undr 18. you also have to pay for shoes on top of that.

Thanks

Its hasn't got anything to do with anyone else at your yard. Its sounds as though you have the perfect balance and as long as you are both happy with the price thats what counts.

Sounds more than fair to me, but as others have said, as long as you, your sharer and pony are happy, enjoy! Good sharers are hard to come by, as are good owners willing to share!

I think both you and the sharer are lucky to have found each other. Tell the others to mind their own business. I hope that your agreement continues for a long time to come. You cant put a price on ease of mind IMO. Mairi.x

Hi
I am living in Germany at the moment , have my own horse again now, but had a horse share last year , and the going rate here is about 100 € a month.. but that is only to ride twice a week. (would be about 77 GBP ).
sounds like you are providing a great deal, the firl gets to ride every day and compete.. but without the hassle of the complete livery charges and no vets bills/shoes ..and a day off every week ! .heaven I would say :-)

I used to have to pay 175 pcm, with shoes, 1/2 vets bills & physio on top! At the end of the day, it is better to have someone who loves and does the best for your pony pay a bit less, than someone getting fed up and paying through the nose!

Good sharers seem hard to find - I would stick with what you are doing and ignore everyone else!

Personally I think if everyone is happy with the situation then that's good enough. I think what you are charging seems very fair. Seems to me that people are poking their noses in where they are not wanted!!

It all just depends on that each of you want.... She wants a pony to ride 6 days a week and is prepared to pay £100 a month to do that. You dont want her to pay anymore or spit vets bills etc... everyones happy...

PS: I pay £50 a month for three days a week plus fill chores.... whcih I know is peanuts!

Well Thanks for all your comments - people who have comented on the price were not being nasty - we were just having a debate on whats a good fee to pay for a horse for share - I think we all came to the understanding that horses that need work and are abit hard going - should be less to share but good horses with good facilities and good supervision are worth a lot more.

I think what my sharer pays is just right - bearing in mind I 100% trust her and know she would never hurt my pony in any way - also she would never let her get away with anything.

Its such a shame that so many people have bad experiences when sharing - this is the second time ive done it and its always worked out really well - I will be so sad when teenager gets too big for pony - she is like a little sister to me !!! bless!! xx

When I've had sharers in the past I've charged 25 per week as I worked out that this is what the horse cost me each week for basic stabling, shoes, hay and feed. I pick up the costs of vets bills and any extras the horse needs, I also provide a quality horse with quality, well fitting tack and rugs. The amount of riding the sharer gets depends on how often they want to come up, but I turn out every morning and do the stable whenever the sharer can't make it. I also give the sharer free lessons and a chance to compete on the cheap as I can provide transport. Around here people will pay a minimum of 25 per week for an hours lesson on a riding school on a horse which isnt any where near as well schooled as my horse - on this basis I think they are getting a bargain!

Well - this is the thing - I giver her lessons all the time and my pony is well schooled and broken to drive so I really give my sharer a good insight into all things equestrian.

Sounds very fair to me. And you both sound happy & sorted so I wouldn't worry.

£100 a month for pony's upkeep is not a lot at all. Especially when that includes vet bills etc etc.

Stay as you are & ignore those who are sticking their nose in as you & the sharer are obviously happy with how things are. Long may it continue

Here she would be looking at around £25/£30 for a lesson which is about an hour. She is paying you that a week & getting lessons from you.

Easily fair

I pay £110 a month for my share and I can ride as often as I wish during the week and owner has her at weekends or evenings if she wants to work on her jumping or whatever. My fee includes cost of food, vet, shoes etc. I muck out each time I go over before I fetch Ellie in so she has a nice clean stall etc
Both myself and the owner find this works very well for us
