Is your farrier good or bad?

My old one is great at shoeing very experienced and patient with youngsters, however he frequently dosent turn up because of van trouble, will tell you he'll be there at 1pm then turns up at 6.30pm after you've taken the afternoon off work to be there. He also has a chat with all and sundry and needs regular tab breaks during shoeing to it usually takes 2.5 hrs for one horse, and thats if you can get him to answer the phone. It's not just with me, he does this with everyone, but I have tried deviating and I'll put up with this instead of one that likes to use his hammer on the horse for sneezing, attemps to put shoes on that are fit for a shetland, turns up drunk with a chauffer, or has managed to get banned for letting his unqualified brother shoe, or one that can shoe all four feet before you've managed to tie the horse up, oh and in case I forget the one that got half way through a shoe, the horse tried to rebalance herself my moving, he pulled the shoe off got in his van muttering about being kicked and drove off, leaving all four of us in stunned silence:eek:

My thoughts exactly...

27 years the same farrier and I am his longest customer. He is a dear friend, turns out immediately if there is a problem and works closely with the vet.

He schedules the horses needs, does any remedial work needed and is fantastic with the foal who needed a weekly trim from 3 weeks old to correct a little problem.

The icing on the cake was my horse winning the best shod hunter at the final Royal Show, it was a very special and fitting moment for a dedicated, skillful and caring farrier. Martin Wilkes non better in my opinion.

My farrier is not prompt, hard to get hold of, you generally have to text, calls don't work, but I have had him for 11 yrs and would never ever change, he is the best with horses, and a very talented chap, my horses whether shod or barefoot have always been sound and very well cared for, he is experienced, knowledgeable and thinks outside the box. He promotes barefoot and offers very good advice, and should there ever be a problem I know he would be there in a shot.

Mine is truly excellent. Nice chap so pleasure to have around the yard. Bloody good at his job and fab with the horses. He fits round my work well and is not over priced. Additionally he advises on what the horse actually needs rather than slapping full sets on everything and letting me pay for it!

My farrier is excellent, and so was my last - I've been very lucky.

My current one 100% supports Shy being barefoot, encourages me to keep rounding the hooves myself and just having him out every 12 weeks, has supported me thru a lami scare, and always turns up on time !!!

Can not complain about his skills, but he has a temper, a couple of my friends have gone on to other farriers because of this.
