Is your horse barefoot horse and in South East England?

Hi everyone

Before I start, I'd just like to say I've had the approval of horse and hound to post this.

I'm a final year vet student and I'm interested in hoof management techniques. I have 2 horses myself, both of which I've managed for periods of time with and without shoes.

Over the next 3 weeks I'm travelling around the South East of England photographing hooves for a research project I'm writing about the influence of hoof management on conformation. I'm hoping this will make it to publication as there's so much anecdotal evidence out there but not a lot published about how shoeing/trimming affects hoof conformation.

I have loads of shod horse volunteers but I need some more barefoot horse volunteers.

I have a few requirements... the horse must be older than 5, but younger than 20, and be in ridden work. Also he/she must have been barefoot for more than 18 months, and regularly trimmed (every 5-8 weeks) rather than self trimming. I know this rules quite a few horses out and it's not an ideal representation of barefoot horses, but I have to make the barefoot group as similar to the shod group as I can and so there's going to be some compromise somewhere.

All I'm wanting to do is photograph each hoof. It would be very quick and totally non-invasive. I need to take photographs on either the day of trimming, or within the few days afterwards.

If you think you can help me out, I'd be so grateful! Please do send me a PM.

Thanks

Jo

Me, me, me. Although I am Eastern region... Too far? Bedfordshire!

Oh poop, that won't work, she isn't due a trim for six weeks!

Firstly I'd like to apologise for the shocking use of getting words in the right order in the title of the thread! Haha!

Secondly, thank you so much for the quick replies already! So great to hear from willing people.

Very sadly littleblackmule I can't do mule feet, even though I'd love to. And Billie1007, Bedfordshire would be fine, but I'm sorry I'll be finished collecting data by then. Thank you so much though.

Please do keep getting in contact if you think you can help me. Thanks

I'm in kent - shes technically self trimming but is touched up with the rasp every few weeks so could probably be stretched to fit your criteria?

You'd be welcome to photo mine (only one fits the criteria - others are too young/old!) but he's only trimmed every 2-3 months and has just been done so won't be for ages, so not much use!

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the offer JFTD! Shame it will be too late though.

You could try contacting a trimmer in that area to see if you can shadow them for a day?

I can recommend a couple if you want to pm me.

Hi Oberon... I actually have several trimmers on board, but if you have any to recommend that would be great! Have PM'd you

I have two in Surrey you can use if you like. They are both barefoot, have been for over 2 years now and trimmed regularly (by me). They were both in work though are currently both off lame! (non-hoof related issues). One went lame literally on tuesday the other has been off a few weeks now as he had to have an operation so will be off for a while, I'm hoping the other will come sound soon! Both were eventing fit before. Let me know if these are any good.

I'm in West Sussex/Surrey boarder with a barefoot NF, 7 years old and in light work & trimmed by an EP every 6-7 weeks - if that's any help?

PM me if it is - more than happy to help if we can ... We have photo's before my EP started trimming - his feet were pretty shocking before as pony had issues with farriers!

Hi Paint it Lucky, Thank you so much, and while I'm sure the lamenesses have no affect on the hooves, if it's something I get asked about in my research defence exam, it might not go down so well. Thank you though!

Ah darn it.....I have two that self trim but one is retired and the other is ridden but is 22.

Lami pony is bare is trimmed by farrier every 5 weeks but has to have boots and pads on turn out and ridden due to bad rotation.

Another who's pony self trims andhas farrier to tidy ever 21 weeks or so. She was done last month so got ages yet to next trim. If you change your mind though we are sSurrey/west Sussex border

I am off j5 of the m3 and my boys done by the farrier on the same cycle as the shod boys. Never worn shoes is ridden 6 days a week and is 9 if hes any good?

Was last done 2 weeks ago.

I have a 5 year old. Been barefoot all his life, but has over the last few months, really started proper work. He did get footy in front a couple of weeks ago, and farrier has put front shoes on, he's still barefoot behind. My farrier would rather he stayed barefoot as he has slightly wonky front legs, and is hoping maybe 1 set of shoes will give him enough growth to take them off again, or maybe he'll need shoes in summer, but not in winter. Not sure if he is some one you'd like to look at, but you are more than welcome to. We are in Essex.

Hi Teresa
Thank you so much although I need all 4 hooves from each horse, and having just been shod on the front will mean I wouldn't be able to use him.
Thank you ever so much for your offer though!
Jo

I have a 5 year old who was trimmed today in the cambs area?

thanks shortstuff99 although I don't think I can get up to Cambs within the next couple of days as I'm booked up with volunteers for the next 5 days. Thank you so much for your offer though! I really do appreciate it.

Kent - 3 barefoot, one in work and normally rock-crunching. Next trim probably in about 6 weeks time if that's any help.

Hi, I am in Kent, I have 4 that are unshod and have been for a while. You are welcome to pm if you still need case studies !!
