Is your horse broken?

Alas my horse is broken permanently.

He has arthritis in his feet, bone spavin and a split DDFT. I spoke to the vet on the phone yesterday and he also mentioned navicular and this is in turn 'fraying' his tendons.

I am devastated. After 4 weeks on Bute, my poor lad is not sound. He can go for his in hand walkies and will be kept comfortable for as long as possible.

Its the heartbreaking side to horses.

My mare is broken too. She's got damaged collateral ligaments in both front feet and damage to the DDFT in the right front foot. She's got a "less than 35% chance" of recovering but I can't claim LOU until next year when I plan to give her away as a brood mare as she's a funny bu**er to ride anyway, (partly due to the foot pain) . Plus I've also just found out my back is permanently knackered and unfixable. I wouldn't mind but this horse hasn't been right since I bought her last year and she was a replacement for my last horse who was PTS due to permanent lameness caused by foot pain! I won't completetly admit defeat though - I'm already searching for the next walking vet bill!!!

(((((VIBES))))) for all our broken horses, and hopefully they will have a good recovery. For those who are broken on a permanent basis, hopefully they will be pain free.

Maybe we could post updates on our neds as things happen?

My gelding is the only broken horse at my yard so it would be nice to have some people to share vet stuff and experiences with while he's getting better.

Boo - Bone spavin, arthritis of the fetlocks, weakened/collapsing hoof wall, pedal bone issues.

Shadow - Bone spavin and arthritis elsewhere.

Joey - Sweet itch and upper fixation of the patella.

Trixie - Old age taking it's toll, entirely retired.... struggling to keep weight on etc.

*big sighs*

This is making me feel better but also worse as my horsey came in from the field happy as larry earlier but was lame in ridden trot so will look at her tommorrow before getting the vet on monday...

I just hope she's not broken broken...
