Is your horse "good in traffic"?

What do you do with your dead dogs?

All three of ours dont have a problem with any of the traffic in the poll, but none of them like it when the road is wet and traffic goes through it and makes that woosh sound!

They need to be good in traffic for us as we mainly hack.

Yes to them all, I could ride Maggie down the M25 during rush hour and she'd be as safe as ever. Tbh I wouldn't have it any other way, we have to do so much roadwork now that I wouldnt risk having a horse that was spooky in traffic, it's just not worth the aggro. Having said that - she did take exception to a scary looking piece of wood the other day that clearly was about to jump up and bite her!

Blimey you lot are brave - in todays litigious society you are prepared to openly admit that your horse is anything other than 100% in traffic?! Not something I would do...

You didn't include trains...I broke one of mine next to the main Edinburgh/Glasgow line (about 10 feet from the tracks) so she is great with trains too

Toffee (aged 17) - NO! Getting better (at her age...

) but still wouldn't trust her with anything bigger than a car (or even a loud diesel car...)

Beano (25 months) - Been absolutely fine in all traffic he has met so far!

Castle is 110% with everything on the roads. Ali can be a bit unpredictable, he's 100% with cars, but isn't a fan of tractors and rattly trailers.

Yes he is brill with all of them but only through training because he was far from good with them when I got him. I would take on another horse not good in traffic but it depends how they react...I would not take on a rearer or bolter for all the tea in china. But can cope with spinners, buckers, planters and reversers!!!

I think its vital to get a horse as bombproof as possible on the roads these days regardless of what job you want the horse to do.
All of mine are fine, but once we met a donkey pulling a caravan and the sec c was absolutely terrified.

Yes to all but he is not to keen when the lorry hydraulics hiss and ambulances with sirens going - but I personally can understand that one !!!!!

And don't even ask about our local trotter pony - send him MENTAL

i ticked yes and all the options as my pony has passed them all on her own very happily she is 100% in traffic the only problem on our narrow lanes is making her stand still while they pass if we are on the way home she wont stop fidgedting which is really annoying!!

My horse is great with farm machinery, HGV;s etc, she gets little tense with motorbikes and cycles. Also freaks out with horses trotting towards her on the road (she is a bit odd with noises)

Stan my young fresian is good with all traffic not so good with young kids running towards him wanting to stroke the big black horse !

Megs is good with most things but can look at mopeds she is fine with big motorbikes but not keen on the put put mopeds.

Yes my two are both good in traffic to hack on their own and in company and will pass all the things mentioned the only time we ever have a slight spaz moment is if perhaps a log has moved or someone has put new tarmac down or if new railings have been put up, because we tend to go the same routes if anything changes that wasn't there before they're a bit confused!!

ETS Actually only thing they're not keen on is the local travellers haring up and down the lanes with their driving ponies!! And thats only because they come through so fast and its not something my two have seen very often!

Well I dont hack so doesnt really apply to me! I TRY to hack occassionally! My 20yr old pony hacks out perfectly but because Im too big for him and he's semi-retired we don't go very far - but he's perfect in traffic (anything - cyclists, HGV's, tractors, combines etc.!). My other one is a bitch to take out, he naps like hell and usually reverses into ditches..... Im TRYING to sort that out though! He has been good in traffic to date, but he gets a little excited if a huge tractor comes past with stuff hanging off it or an HGV lets off its air brakes right beside him. But he's only young so I guess thats to be expected to a degree. I wouldnt trust him 100% though still, probably just because we havent had much experience of traffic! My other horse was good in traffic when I used to hack him. Its cows he has a MAJOR problem with.... we dont hack anymore because of them!

Its funny - all my past horses had been excellent to hack and were all brilliant in traffic but my current main 2 are crap at hacking full stop!! Im a nervous wreck hacking nowadays thought after too many incidents so that wont be helping at all!

James is foot perfect in traffic no matter what it is. This makes him the perfect 'protector' for Muffin who's terrified of pretty much everything except very slow cars!

If there is a lorry coming towards us that won't stop I walk James down the wrong side of the road until it stops completely so Muffin doesn't freak and he just couldn't care less.

Typically for a TB though, forget the traffic, if theres a funny coloured leaf in the hedge etc he'll shy like its the end of the world!!!!

One of mine is great in traffic. He doesn't bat an eyelid at cyclists coming up behind him and has marched without hesitation through a ford which was swirling across the road. My other horse doesn't hack out at all although he is good with the yard tractor because he's used to it and it brings food so it can only be a "good thing"!

he will look at things occasionally but not spook - there are advantages to having a horse that's blind in it's right eye! x

Lol Blue is so funny with the tractor and trailer! When we're moving the hay in the trailer he'll follow it across the field and every time we stop to open a gate or something he'll be there eating the hay off the back of the trailer!

i voted yes to all bar pedestrians who come up behind him because he was beaten up as a youngster he can be funny with them particulalry if they have something in their hands like an umbrella or rambling stick. he used to be really bad with them, he use to spin round to face them then back away from them. hes alot better now though but not 100%

*he's mainly concerned (spooky) about the leaf thats the 'wrong colour' or new road marking & he just has a litle jump

Blossy is 100% in traffic, she will go past everything and through the smallest gap - yet shes scared of plants with big leaves out hacking

Archie is also pretty traffic proof - hes fine with lorrys/buses/cyclists/tractors etc.

My girl's brill in traffic (touch wood!) and I'm certain its because she was exposed to so much stuff when out showing as a youngster. However she sometimes turns her head away when a big vehicle comes up fast from behind - I think that's because of the draft!

He he, took one of mine just down a tiny bit of road and into a gateway into the field I was going to ride round - little puddle and what does he do? Leap literally 4ft over the bloody thing. He he, and this is a horse Im taking to an ODE next week!! The water may be interesting....

as i told the cyclist who asked if my horse was bombproof " i have never let a bomb off under him but hes fine with everything else"
tongue.gif

he doesnt like the sight of joggers in the distance though
smirk.gif

dont think there is such a thing as i 100 % bombproof as they are living animals.

great with everything up to and including light aircraft, helicopters, trains, but not those people that jump off cliffs with a parachute tied to their backs (?)

yes and ticked all boxes she doesn'treally care and if a car goes to fast she pulls her self right in or pulls an angrey face at the car which is quite amusing to see the drivers expresion(sp) when she had to cope with a helicopter landing near her everyone told me i was mad and stupid because i wasn'tbothered about it they soon changed their tune when izzy went to sleep and missed the action bless her its a hard life standing still
