Hello,

Before I start I'd just like to say I have horse and hound's permission to post this.

I've posted a few times about this in the past and so apologies if you've already seen this. I'm a vet student, studying at the Royal Veterinary College. For my final year I need to do a research project, for which I've chosen to compare the conformation of barefoot and shod horses. This is a huge project for me, and I'm hoping for it to go to publication in a reputable veterinary journal.

I've started my research period now and I'm quite successfully collecting data by means of photographing hooves, but I have more shod horses than barefoot.

I'm desperately looking for just a few more barefoot horses to photograph their hooves. It doesn't matter whether they are trimmed by a farrier or podiatrist, all I'm asking for is that they've been trimmed within the last 5 days when I see them, they're sound, they're trimmed on a regular basis (ie not self trimming), they've been barefoot for more than 18 months, and they're aged between 5 and 20. I'm fully aware this doesn't particularly represent the true barefoot population, but for validity of my study, I must make sure they are similar to the shod horses I've photographed.

Does anyone think they might be able to help me out? I'm available South of London to photograph on tues the 28th, sat the 1st, sun the 2nd, mon the 3rd, sun the 9th and tues the 11th at the moment. And I'm available north of London between the 5th (wed) and 8th (sat).

Please do send me a message if you think you can help! And please let your barefoot friends know too. Thank you ever so much!

Jo

You might want to try the Phoenix barefoot forum too! If you haven't already.....

I'm in Kent but horses not trimmed recently or due to be trimmed - this time of year they generally go longer as they self trim.....

I do have a little new Forest mare never been shod but she is 24 so too old.

I am about to take the shoes off one of my Arab mares but again will not be any good to you.

I would be interested in your results.

Thank you so much for your replies. I'll try that forum too!

As for the results, I've agreed to let horse and hound have them, as well as they should be published in a veterinary journal around this time next year.

Hi Jo,
I have a 7 year old Danish warmbloods, Did have shoes on hinds for a while, but now unshod again. Farrier coming on the 4th to trim, so 11th would be ok. He is doing 10 mile sponsored ride on the 9th. I am in east Sussex if of interest to you.

was about to PM you but saw a caveat was that they had to be trimmed within 5 days of your visit.... something I can't promise as the horse pretty much self trims in summer and I just tend to run a rasp over the worst of the flair so she doesn't trip over it

I'd love to help but my horses haven't been trimmed for more than a year....

(the working horses, youngsters get trimmed every 6 weeks :) )

Thanks guys for your interest. I know it's a pain of a limitation to my study as I know the requirement that they're regularly trimmed rules out an awful lot of barefoot horses, but if I want to publish I have to ensure my shod population of horses and my barefoot population of horses are as similar as possible.
