Is your horse your pet?

Just a random question after a discussion in my office. Would you use the word "pet" to describe your horse or "animal". When you say pet do you think of dogs and cats and fluffy bunnies more than ponies?

I'm not sure I'd use the word pet, it seems a bit trivial for half a tonne of horse!

Nope I would agree with you on that one...in fact I think of my horses as part of the family but then maybe I am mental?

Yes, my ponies are my pets; and as charlie55 says I would have them in the house if it was bigger!!

I know they are part of the family because I couldn't part with any of them even though two are just field ornaments

Mine is my baby! In fact talking about her with my neighbour last night she said that I talk about my horse the same way as she talks about her son!!! We were comparing notes on parenting!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!! I hasten to add here that I have no human children, just my girl in the signature!!! Mine would go in the house two if it was big enough. One of our stallions let himself into our kitchen when I was about 12 years old!!!

I don't think my horse is my pet, I think I am HER pet

It certainly feels like she owns me sometimes!

Not sure I'd use the word pet as it does remind me of dogs and cats and little fluffy things, but he's definately more than just an animal - he's part of the family

He is an animal that I have for pleasure purposes, therefore I yes I would class him as a pet, although I don't actually use the term pet.

If I had a few horses in training for example, then no I wouldn't class them as pets, despite not treating them any different, they would owned for the sole purpose of making me some brass...hopefully!

To me a pet is an animal that you love, look after, spend money on, and that is never seen as a business - you never expect them to make money, and if something were to happen to them, you stick with it all the way through (no "companion home wanted" just because you can no longer ride horse).

Couple of them are my pets and I do call them pets, the rest are dealing stock/in training etc, but I don't treat them any different on a daily basis.
The pets have different purpose, so I suppose my expectations of them are different - read Grace does as she pleases...

River is a pet... mainly because I can't really do anything with him but give him cuddles and gentle walks!!!

I guess Luca is too - but it feels odd to think of him that way - more a partner where I hope to achieve things (only personal goals but none the less!)...

Toughone, I always refer to her as my horse, never used the word pet before. Then again I probably wouldn't call my dog a pet either...I would call a gerbil a pet

something that couldn't be trained or used for anythign useful (other than gerbil kebabs) yum!)

No.

None of them are. One way or another they all pay towards their keep.

Definition of Pet: " a domesticated animal kept for pleasure rather than utility"

Tyler is definately my pet, more than that , he is my baby boy (although I haven't seen many 650kg babies about!!)

He gets spoiled rotten and isn't expected to do very much so from his perspective I am the maid!!
