Just wondering how you view your horse(s). None of them are right or wrong, just interesting to know how we all fit into the big scheme of horse ownership.

I voted member of the family and the last thing to go :) We have always kept ours for the duration, as long as they have sufficient quality of life to make it ok for them. We did this when they were at livery, so now we have our own land, it just makes it even more certain. When my Dad came to help with the tractor last week, he commented how much they were part of the family when they live 'at home' :)

I voted friend that I would only sell if circumstances forced it... but I have only had him six months- give it another six months and he'll move up to member of the family without a doubt!

One of mine is a pet and will never go anywhere but when I have another it's there for a purpose and would be sold if necessary. The first one is due to start rehab work as and when the ground dries up if ever! Ridden or non ridden he stays and the other is there to do a job.

I voted friend as he's only on part loan at the moment so the decision would ultimately be out of my hands. We do have it stipulated that we'd have 1st refusal wrt sale in our contract though, in which case it would be family :)

On my phone, so can't see poll. From other replies I am guessing it would be family though. I have the 14.2 I got when I was 10, who is second only to my daughter. And when daughters 11.1 is outgrown, despite the fact she'll still be under 10, she'll remain for life too. At one point, I would have considered full loaning her when outgrown, but daughter made me promise to never send her away. She's a pet who she loves riding, not just a temporary ride. But tbh, even if daughter changed her mind about full loaning, (after seeing flying pigs perhaps), I wouldn't send her away. Most we'll ever do is find a rider when daughters legs are past her knees & she can't even hack her. Otherwise will break her to drive for exercise. I've worked on a few yards, worked freelance,& bought & sold projects, but I still regard every horse I meet as a 'pet' rather than a tool.

I sell loads of horses but none of the have ever been mine. Always trained and sold horses for others.

I loaned my childhood pony out, but he came back for his last 10 years of life. I bought Molly as a investment to sell on, but two months in and she isn't going anywhere. She is family now, as is Fly and they are going nowhere. TBH, I knew this would happen with Molly, it was just a good thing to say to justify it to the other half...however much I believed it myself at the time

If I suddenly lost my job, and was living on the breadline for more than 6 months to a year, I would have to either sell, part loan out or full loan, I never want my horse to suffer for my woes, he's worth more than that to me. But of course, i'd have to vet where he ends up first, no way would I sell with my eyes shut. That would be my worst case scenario..

Having been in the circumstances that my horses had to go for a while I chose the friend option.

I had two and I just couldnt keep them. So I sold the mare who despite having had a tendon injury was the most saleable (younger, prettier, more talented) and my older gelding got loaned out to a lovely lady at the other en of the country.

He has since came back but im in a better position to have him now :) I would try and find a loan home for him rather than sell him as he owes me nowt and was my youngerdays pony and we have done everything together :D

I breed to sell.

I buy to sell.

Most I would sell for the right price to (what would appear to be) the right home.

A couple I will keep for the duration, if my circumstances changed I would pts rather than pass the buck.

So what does that make me

None of my horses ever have, or ever will, come before my family.

Love Alf to bits, but I wouldn't keep him at the expense of my family. If he were younger, sounder, easier - then I wouldn't have a problem with him going on to make someone else as happy as he makes me, but he isn't, so would PTS.

Normally I would usually sell if I got the right offer. However, the one I have at the moment is an oldie who I sold in his youth and who came back a few years ago and he'll be here for the rest of his life.

I voted 50% commercial, based on the majority of the horses I will own in the future. We'll be breeding racehorses with the primary purpose of racing them ourselves, however further down the line they will either be sold on within racing (to race in other hands as aged horses) or as yearlings in the annual sales once we've established a name.

There are a handful of horses that will never leave us though - my Big Ears, and OH's two mares, Beachgirl and Tracey. There's reasons behind this that I won't go into, but they will never be sold.

I voted last thing to go but in reality he's 19 a tricky ride and has a list of insurance exclusions as long as your arm so 'selling' him isn't really a possibility even if I wanted to !!

He would be the last thing to go but it would be a trip over the rainbow bridge not an ad in horse and hound for him!

I have always said until it comes to horse or house I will find a way to keep her. I am lucky in that she is the type who could go and live out 24/7 365 if needed (in fact she would probably love it!). This applies to my current horse though, I have sold them on before when needed - this one is special :-)

Of the 2 I have full control over -

1 is with me forever more, and if circumstances changed he would go to horsey heaven.

The other I'm undecided on tbh, he may stay, he may be loaned or if the very right home came along it's not out of the equation to sell. Kind of depends on if he will do a suitable job for me long term.
