Is your name in your horses passport?

One I have, one I haven't. Have filled the form in but not got round to posting it. The one who I have changed into my name I haven't even named yet. Passport just has a number. It's €45 to name him so I haven't bothered :)
 
I have 10 horses, not one of them has a passport.

My name is on all the registration docs though.
 
For bhs gold insurance you have have
To have your name on it to be insured. I asked, as me and my dad have to have are own names on it as not insured if not. Otherwise 1insurance wud have done us.
 
nope, Missy I never changed to mine before I sold her to my step sister and she hasn't changed the name in her passport either, Taz is still owned by a dealer apparently :o despite owning him for 9 years and changing the name on Rio's passport seems to be a huge amount of effort... im sure I will get around to it at some point :o
 
Im too sacred to change my boy's passports into my name, as i am at least the 3rd owner since the breeder and i worry that pio will have to contact them and the breeder will deny all knowledge of a sale, as he was bred by a traveler and i think 2nd owner was also a traveler, 3rd owner brought him to sell on. I do have a receipt for him, but he has never had an ownership update, and i couldn't bare to loose him especially to a home that may not keep him in the style he has become accustomed to.
 
Passports are not proof of ownership, so if your not registered as the keeper of the horse no one can take them off you if you have a bill of sale, I have four registered in my name but only as I sorted out their passports to start with for my two oldies (22 and 30 yr old) and the two pre's were bred/ first registered with me, two have 'lost' their passports :O - they're somewhere in the house? But the last one has still got the original breader down, previous owner didn't change and I havn't yet either - have the bills of sale for him with change of ownership stated so he's mine :) but can't see point of anymore

Even when two of them have been to leahurst neither had their passports looked at, even my old boy when he had colic surgery And loads of drugs, just a waste of money and time tbh, lined someone elses pockets and the gov :(
 
This thread has got me thinking...I understand that a passport isn't proof of ownership, but in reality what is?

So, a horse is bred by A, who sells to B, who sells to C, who sells it to you and gives you a receipt...

Unless you also have the receipt from A to B, and B to C, the horse cannot be proved to have ever belonged to C, so your receipt is useless, and you have no proof that the horse is actually yours!

When I changed ownership in one of my passports (the only one I have done, *slaps wrist*), I had a change of ownership form signed by the previous owner, but to be honest my granny could have signed it and they would have been none the wiser.

The Royal Agricultural Society of NZ are trying to bring it in here! We are seriously against this sort of body doing it - should be set up by the Ministry of Ag as its really there as a protection for all against diseases being spread around.

We are Equine Flu free and though we do get strangles outbreaks at times they are never bad enough to cause much havoc.
 
Yes. Why wouldn't you, unless you are not planning to keep the passported one longer than the month or so it takes to complete the change of owner documentation, send and receive back.
Poor record keeping is a bum-biter, when you least need it, ime.
 
Yup of course.

Wouldn't think of not doing it, Buddy's breeder did pay however he sent it off and got it back then gave it too me when I payed the last installment, also have a receipt too.

I do have 4 passports of my horses who have died however :S never sent those off...... Whoops
 
My name isn't, but my dad's is. I keep meaning to broach the subject with him, as he did say a while back that I could have her. Until she's in my name I won't feel 100% like she is mine though :o

Quite a lot of the horses we've owned or bred are still in my dad's name, despite the fact we don't have them anymore. The problem with that is if there's a welfare issue further down the line and the RSPCA contact the relevant PIO, they will be directed to us as the last registered owners.

Fortunately a lot of the horses I deal with do get transferred to their new owners because they're racehorses and the BHRC requires the declared owner to be the registered owner with us.
 
Nope my current 1 isnt but only had her a month or so. My previous horse i had for 4 years i didnt. She was bought from a friend, the breeder who was on passport, and was sold back to same friend 2 months ago so that saved us both a few pounds. I still have the passport of my old boy who was pts 2 years ago. The whole passport/micro chip system is a joke and untill they deal with it better my attitude towards it wont change
 
Nope, neither passports are in my name, nor are their chips. They are in the name of the women who owned them before the people I bought them from. I have no intentions of changing anything either, while the whole system is such a complete joke what good will it do to change anything.

My horses are with me until they die so I'm not worried about selling them on.
 
Had Alfie 3yrs and his passport is still registered to the breeder although I didn't buy him from her, he was with someone else then.

The shetland is CHAPS registered and we've had her 2yrs but she's also registered with her breeder despite changing hands twice before I bought her.

Does the person on the microchip have your contact details? I do wonder if stolen horses would find their way back to their owners without these details.
 
The ones that I got passported are all in my name.

A couple I bought from friends, so I didn't bother changing the name due to the expense - I asked both if they were happy with me leaving them in their names and they were, and both have now been pts.

A fairly recent purchase has a very out of date owner listed - the horse's breeder in fact. The horse has had at least 3 owners since the breeder and not one has bothered to change the passport. When I rang to ask how much it was, they said £28 plus the cost of recorded delivery - £28 just to change a few lines on a computer? Daylight robbery! So horse is still listed as owned by breeder.
 
Yes mine most certainly is... as it's against the law not to do so.

Only one I have never had changed was an imported horse. I got in touch with the relevant breed society in this country that said they could change over details, and gave me the name of the person I needed to speak to. That person never got back to me, despite me chasing and chasing them
 
Yep one of the first things I did :D loved getting it back with my name in it. And it will be the last name in his passport too!! :)
 
Nope. Kal's passport hasn't been updated since it was issued and I know he's had at least two owners before me. Probably something to do with the fact that it's a Polish passport with all the hassle associated with sending it off/not speaking Polish, etc.
