Is your name in your horses passport?

Im in the same situation, I bought a new mare 2 weeks ago and want to get my name registered on her passport.

There is only one registered on there and thats her breeder, I know she has had 5 other owners since then (poor thing is only 7)

She is also not named and I have read that I can name her ?? Is this correct??

She is a ISH and she has a White Irish Horse Board passport (only dam side listed)

Yes, you can have her named when you return the passport to the IHB to have it putinto your name.

It really really really is not a legal requirement to have passport in any owners name. You can if you wish but it doesn't matter a hoot.

Once again,
the passport is a legal requirement for each and every
horse, donkey and mule.
It is personal to that equine and must accompany it wherever it goes.
All drugs administered should be recorded in it..
It has no function whatsoever in identifying a human, be that owner, breeder or any other.
For unregistered, non pure bred horses, I can see it is a useful place to keep various owners details updated. But nothing more.
The law states the passport must be kept with the horse.
The law (rightly or wrongly) couldn't care less who owns that
horse.
 
did with the last 2 as pio was breed society and had to to show in their shows.2 before that didnt as expensive and just didnt get round to it. last one wasnt going to bother, looked up pio to see if still arround and it was £7 done online and they sent me a lable to put on passport! if it was this cheap and easy with everyone maybe more would
 
Just had my ISH officially named (one day we will jump bs lol) so added my name as well. Cost about £42 but was back about 7 days later.

I want to be the named owner and also name my mare as she isnt named on her passport.

Also if your name is not in the passport then the buyer has to wait longer while the PIO checks records. Officially you have to be named in the passport to be able to pass it on otherwise they have to check with the original old owner before it can be changed and that can take ages.

I'm a firm believer that the seller should have to send it off with the new owner name and address so that it gets sent straight back to the new owner; it's the only way to keep things up to date to enable checks. I hate the HPA which allows you to change ownership online, no security checks whatsoever.

All of mine done and dusted.

Yes, you can name her. Official name? Or just a stable name? Ooh, decisions, decisions!

Irish Horse Board has a website. I downloaded the forms for change of ownership, then sent the passport, form and fee off. They stuck a typed sticker over the last owner's details and sent it back within a week.

Yeah i have just printed the 2 forms off :)
Now to think of what to name her, yeah its going to cost me to do it and alot of people are saying they wouldnt pay, but i want to :)

Are you having to pay the €60 as if it's a name change? I filled in the form but never sent it off. He's still Coloured Firefly in his passport. Odd name and I gave him something totally unrelated for his stable name.

Looks like it will cost me £42 according to the sheet, its not a name change as she is just called 'foal 123456' now.

I agree with you 100%. The legal onus is on the new buyer to register. It is a real problem for CBHS as we lose track of our horses critically endangered according to RBST. Breeders like myself would much prefer it if we could legally register the new owners name and address.

Again, I keep saying it, in France there is a separate 'ownership document' which is returned to the only PIO in France - National Stud. If you don't register yourself as the new owner you cannot compete with, breed from or sell the horse. It is a much better system.
 
The problem is that sellers registering it would mean paying for the horse and trusting the seller to do it ok if you know the person less good if you don't.
Also you would then be travelling the horse without the passport which is not legal .

I think all passports should be standardised ie they should laid out exactly the same .
I think they should have a sellers form in them and the seller should remove this and send it To the PIO who could then chase up owners after a month.
It would cost more but it chivvy everyone along.
The PIO could add a new sellers form when the passport came in for updating.
 
I have good about not being supposed to write in the passport.

Y/o's bred a foal, passported it as you are supposed, it came and had 'colt' in it, said horse is a mare.

So dually sent it off, cover note to change to a mare please, £15 handaling fee paid.

Passport arrives back, in biro 'colt' is scrubbed out and 'mare' scribbled beside it. Not even a stamp to verify :S

You have to giggle :P its a bit of a sham really.
 
Yes but I was a bit peeved for £25 plus P&P - all they did was write my name and address in biro and stamp it! I could have done that!

Have to admit he did feel more 'mine' once it was returned. I know it's not proof of ownership but it still felt good!

Nope, I doubt very much they even know the horses have been sold on to me (long story).

I am taking a risk of them being stolen and not returned, but I doubt very much they would get my wee lad loaded without a huge fuss and YO house is right next to the fields. Much as I love him, the big lad is clearly a very old horse so I would hope not worth anyone's effort to steal.

That said if I got another horse with the possibility that I might sell it on at a later date I would probably at least get the chips changed over to my name. Only if I was intending to compete would I get the passport updated.
 
Yes. But it took me 2 years to do it, its also on his ownership certificate.
I only got round to it when he injured himself and had to have on going treatment at the vets, mainly for the insuance purposes.

So how does that work for people who ride horses on loan? Their names wont be in the passport??

Unfortunately if you import a French horse to the UK, SIRE keeps the ownership document leaving you with a French passport with no ownership anywhere.

I can be checked as the legal owner online though.
 
Never changed mine either, the POI doesnt exist anymore so the passport is absolutely useless!
