ISH temperaments? Buying unseen. 2yr old by Eastern Hero.

I'm looking at buying a 2yr old ISH gelding.

Thoughts on the cross? I've met a few and they seen to range from the amazing to the downright dangerous. Either very very good, or horrid! Is it breeding related or just luck? Sire is Eastern Hero (any info?) and dam's (TB) name i've already forgotten but will find out asap :o (told on phone, have asked again on email)

I'd be buying unseen from Ireland through the same dealer and producer that we got the amazing Rebel from (also bought unseen, see previous posts) and trust them to know and sell a good horse. He's a nice looking scruffy baby in photo's and apparently very quiet and laidback.

He's to hunt, common ride and Riding Club stuff as well as bit showing, so, whilst talented would be nice, quiet easy temperament is more important.

Please share any ISH (RID x TB) stories, esp temperaments.
 
I have a 6 yr old ISH who is a chestnut mare . She has a lovely nature loves people easy to handle . Gets on with most horses. She is responsive and willing to ride. She does have her moments but on the whole she is amazing.
 
Is she sharp or spooky? Two things I can't be bothered with(been there, done that, got the bone plates :o). Do you know her breeding?

I have a chestnut ISH. He's lovely. Not sharp, not spooky, easy going boy. Very brave and always tries his best. Has the odd cheeky moment but never nasty.
 
I have a coloured ish.. Sire is king diamonds lines(id).. Dam.unknown(tb)..

I love him to bits. Lovely temperment,willing to please,very forward to ride,spooky & sharp,a difficult ride!

However... Some of that may be down to treatment ( ex bsja pony)

In the IDxTB, temperament is often dictated to a large degree by the TB dam - unless the stallion is VERY good for temperament! My own RID boy has an amazing temperament - and throws it - but foals out of a VERY sharp TB (or Warmblood) mare will be much sharper than foals out of a laidback TB or an ID mare. How much of this is genetic - and how much learned behaviour from the mare, who knows! For example, I have a VERY bossy RID mare who is always 'in charge' of any group she is in - all her daughters are JUST as bossy - and Alpha mares in their respective age groups. The foals LEARN - from Mum - that chasing other horses off their food is rewarding!:D But they may also have a genetic predisposition towards bossiness!
 
She is neither sharp or spooky . As above always tries her best. Her sire is golden lariat and get dam is miregold joker. :)
 
There is no such thing as a definitive view of the temperament of an ISH. I have had every variety under the sun, all the traditional ID,x TB amd they have all been utterly different!
 
Thanks janet. That's what I suspected. Producer says he's very quiet and laidback and i'd trust his judgement, but still want to find out more. Will go TB digging once know the dam (will ask breederif he's got mum, which is quite likely, although he does also buy in nice foals)
 
I looked after rebel, crosstown dancer, softee, whippy and sky when I was younger and they all had excelent temperaments. I hunted a full sister to rebel and she was a very easy ride, even on her first day out. Crosstown dancer never bucked or rared when I broke him.

Any draught in the breeding usualy means that they are easy to work with and the TB dam should add a little sharpness and speed.
 
I have an ISH gelding who is now 20 by Master Imp. He is amazing in every way and has manners to burn. An absolute Gent in every way and is the best horse I have ever owned. he has rubbish feet but perfect in every way. He is sensitive though....mane pulling a no no and completely tickilish to clip. He is now retired at home and will live with us here until the end.
I bought a new horse and wanted an ISH to replace him but ended up with a holstiener!

1 x mare by a stallion called Rock of Cashel who is by Legaun Prince. Her dam was a wonderful mare by Be Friendly. She is calm, placid and honest as the day is long. Absolutely love her.
1 x gelding by Old Leighlin, out of a connemara mare. He is playful, sharp, spooky and really intelligent. I suspect he gets much of his temperament from the mare.

the 2 could not be more different - aside from their ability to live on fresh air.
 
I have a ISH mare that was shipped from Ireland as a 4 year old and she is a complete witch, really rude and bad tempered also she was sold with a 5 stage vetting and turned out she had kissing spine and was sold with it, I would prob buy another ISH but only if it were a gelding and def would not buy it from IReland
 
I have a chestnut ISH mare, shipped over from ireland as a youngster. Sire is Political Merger and Dam is Kilfane Autumn Gold.

Sharp and spooky. She also bites. She has had some past issues though with previous owners. She regulary gets me off! Jumps like a stag and very fast but not for the faint hearted. Wouldn't change her for the world though :)
 
My ISH mare is not spooky at all and very bold. She can sometimes be a bit sharp but I put that down to her Cruising bloodlines.

ISH are known for being easy to train and willing to learn. My mare loves being ridden and enjoys her work. :D
 
i have an ISH by a TB called riot helmet, out of an ID mare called maggie eton. don't know anything about either of these horses (getting curious now tho, so google here i come!)

my mare is generally very quiet on the ground, kind and genuine. she can be sharp to ride, and has poor feet, but she is lovely and wouldn't swap :)
 
As the OP has probably surmised, the temperament of the ISH depends on the bloodlines - it's worth doing a little digging and maybe asking some questions on the equestrian section at boards.ie. Overall, though, they're amazing; it's not for nothing that people from the UK come here regularly to horse-shop! I have a chestnut gelding and wouldn't trade him for anything. (Though he missed out on the brave gene - a 16.3 chicken.)
 
The one I had before was a chicken. Bless him. He had been a show horse and I don't think he had seen much of outside life! The one I have now is much braver than I am! Someone let a flare off in field next to us out hacking. I jumped but he didn't bat an eyelid :)
 
mines is out of RID blackthorn and an arab mare. now that he has grown up a bit and seen some more of the world he is better (hes 5) as a 3/4 year old he was v spooky and sharp , still has his moments but becoming more and more chilled out and has a lovely nature - not a nasty bone in hia body i love

I agree - they are fantastic, personable, versatile animals. It's worth bearing in mind that the ISH can tend to mature more slowly, same as the ID in general. Even though they are lovely and chilled, they aren't plods - very intelligent. Mine has an incredible memory - I can't practice a dressage test more than three or so times before the day, as he then anticipates all the movements!

I eventually decided to buy him and have no regrets :D

He was utterly filthy and terrified when he arrived (having been living in a big group like cattle over winter) and my first thoughts were 'oh gods, what have I done?!' :eek: It took three people and a bucket of feed to corner him to catch him. :eek: He'd been taught to lead and tie up but not much else. It doesn't seem like anyone's every been nasty or harsh to him, he'd just have little done with him and was very wary of humans.

But a couple weeks later and he's nigh on impossible to get rid of :D First on up to see me, tries to Help on every occasion, very put out if it's not his turn. Rugs up and picks his feet up loose in the field. Been out for a couple of walks and he's very brave and not at all sharp or spooky (thank gods!). He's athletic and loves running about but he's very sensible and laid back. He also shows no signs of separation issues so far.

So so far, so good! He's got the temperament I was looking for and most certainly has the moves and athletisism!

I love my ISH mare (out of clover echo) she is the most sweetest animal :D
