In such a predicament at the moment. New horse arrived on the yard couple days ago, has a snotty nose, temp and cough. Yard on lockdown until results back but I am currently on my way home from a stay away show………. (Horse arrived after I had left) so my horse hasn’t been in contact with said horse. I don’t have anywhere else to put my horse we will have to go back to the yard.
I was going to turn him out disinfecting gates etc as I go then tend to him first in the morning before my other horse (who wasn’t at the show)
The horse in question is currently isolating in a field up the back end of the yard (same as mine) probably about 10-15 metres away.
Is this pointless? My horse would go out overnight anyway upon returning home but would normally come in during the day. I’m trying to think of every possibility to keep him from becoming poorly (if the swab shows anything it’s currently still not back)
What would you do? Would you try isolate as best as you can? The hard thing is it’s shared hay shared taps etc. will I be fighting a loosing battle :(

Hard part is yard owner is just a farmer, no concept of biosecurity hence how we have ended up in this mess as no policies in place for isolation….
Have been trying to find even just a field in the meantime but having no luck so far.

Whereabouts are you? Somebody on here may be able to point you in the right direction.

If the yard is on lockdown surely you shouldn’t be allowed to return anyway. I would be ringing around to find some temporary lodgings until yard has a result.

Lockdown means nothing can leave, not yard horses can't go home. I'd want to stay away but it's not always so easy! If it's flu, your vaccs will protect you a lot. Not 100% but a lot. And it's air borne so there;s not much you can do other than ensure ill horse is as far from the others as possible. If it's strangles it is tranmission via contact only - not via air : Almost always nose to nose or sharing hay/water. Very rare for transmission to be from taps, gates etc so I'd not worry too much. Just make sure whoever is dealing with the ill horse either only deals with that horse or deals with that horse last, then disinfects hands, boots and immediately leaves yard. Good luck - it sounds very stressful x

The horse got tested for EHV, strangles and influenza. Both my horses are fully up to date with flu vac and they both also have EHV vaccinations!
Thank you for your reply that helps ease my worry slightly, I am hoping that it just ends up being viral and nothing to worry about. It got tested on Wednesday but still no results and it’s now the weekend :/

I can only offer you a yard in Oxfordshire I’m afraid. But depending where you’re heading from, you could break your journey here for a bit longer. I have empty stables and fields at home.
Thank you so much for the offer although would’ve been a bit out our way but very kind of you. Thankfully looking like we are ok to return home x

Hi everyone had word from the yard the wee horse has influenza (not vaccinated). It’s to stay in isolation until swabbed again.
should be ok for returning (thank god) as fully vaccinated.
Do you need to be careful of taking your horse back out again? Presumably there’s a possibility of it being transmitted amongst other horses both vaccinated and not. I don’t know if you’re still on lockdown so that might be implicit in that? Sorry if that sounds daft, genuinely curious!
