Hi

I have a 2014 Isuzu Dmax manual and while I really like it to tow with, I struggle with hill starts.

It feels like the bite point is so high that i either stall easily or over rev and spin the wheels.

Am I best taking off traction control? 4wd or 2wd? Low ratio? Any tips?

Hmm, I have a 2017 and tow a 3.5T livestock box with it, fully loaded. I’ve never had a real issue - if Im hillstarting with a loaded box I do go into 4x4, especially if it’s wet/slippy. i have found getting decent AT tyres on it has had a big impact, it came with really rubbish road tyres and being light in the back end the wheels did spin a bit at times.

I still have the standard crappy road tyres on it, so I do agree that's probably a change that's definately worth making. I guess I am still getting used to it too. I went from an X reg SWB shogun to this...so EVERYTHING is different!!!

the Dmax tows great BUT of the pick ups it has one of the lighter chassis - hence you can still got at 70mph on a dual carriageway in it. I've found it lighter and more prone to slip than the Hilux we had but once you get used to it, really, really good to tow with so dont lose heart. We actually have 2 - hubby commutes in his and it still has the crappy road tyres - the difference between the 2 is really noticeable even with day to day driving.

I don't know much to be honest but we did a steep hill start with a loaded box yesterday (we have a discovery though so may be different) and hubby just put it in low ratio and it pulled away like it was nothing, bearing in mind we had come to a halt cos normal first gear hadn't quite cut it as we were going slowly up cos it was a bumpy drive and didn't want to bounce horse around too much.

So yeah, try low ratio?
