I currently give my horse a calmer supplement. I have been reading that the active ingredient is Magnesium Oxide and I have found a web site that sells Magnesium Oxide to use for horses at £11.99 (compared to calmer £25!)

Is this true can plain magnesium oxide be given??

I give my boy Magnesium Oxide as it is good for his feet and helps him process sugars - he had a huge crest and fat pads when I got him.

I always thought the big problem with supplements is their absorbsion rate, so that when you pay a higher price you pay it for a product that has been designed for better absorbsion (therefore you need less of it and it works better), but I may be wrong.

Check the purity of the mag ox before buying, Barefoot basics and Natural Horse Supplys are quite informative. I feed it to my good doers and barefoot ones and combined with a busy daily exercise programme, they manage well on our good grazing.

^^ I understand this to be the case, too.

On the subject of Magnesium Oxide being an effective calmer, I believe it works well if the horse is actually deficient in Magnesium, but not if it is just naturally nervy or over-energetic.
