One of our fabby ponies is up for loan. A super girl came to try him, twice, and took him along with our others, to an all day Rally at our Pony Club. I gave them a bit of space and let them take him up to the arena get on - only they didn't tighten the girth and he the saddle slipped round, scared him, she eventually fell off and pony did a few terrified laps trying to get rid of his saddle. I felt so sorry for them both. To her credit she did ride him for the entire day - jumped and everything

- and made a damn good fist of it, but her mother was traumatised. Such a shame as it wasn't really his fault. Even though he was a bit prancy, he wasn't being naughty or sharp and by her own admission she said if the saddle hadn't slipped she would have been fine. A lovely opportunity to borrow a top class pony with every bit of tack and equipment you could dream of, spoiled. Very disappointing

Arghhhhh I can't tell you how lovely and considerate a rider the little girl is and how much I wanted her to have him

So they decided not to have the pony because they hadn't tightened the girth?

I think your pony may have had a lucky escape!

Well, you know what mothers can be like!

I feel sorry for the girl - I think all of us make that mistake once in our lives

I don't know about once - I always forget to tighten my girth!! - Good job I have high withered, narrow horse

I forgot to do the second tighten, which is required for the Appy last night, as a result of that and being late, I entered the class with the saddle having slipped forward and did not do the mare any credit at all. It happens to us all, I am very red faced, but know it was my fault not the mares.

How disappointing brighteyes.

I wish I lived near you. lol.

I'm sure there will be so many people desperate to be the new rider!

They have been looking for a long time and want the impossible to find. Our pony is a superstar and too precious to sell, so not rubbish to be offloaded. She rode him superbly (I am very fussy and if you can't ride properly, this pony will not go properly) We are his only home other than his breeder and he is widely admired. I would have thought, with their other pony having many worse issues

ours would have been a reasonable stop gap.

Oh I was so hoping he was bigger just what we have been looking for with pc etc and our fantastic little mare has to go home after 18 months .Can I stretch his legs for a 15 year old .

Such a shame, but don't feel too despondent, they may well change their minds. He sounds super! If they don't take him then good luck with finding him someone suitable.

He sounds absolutely perfect for my daughter.

Unfortunately I do not live next door to you and would be concerned about having a gelding with two mares as we have had trouble in the past

Such a shame, seems a real waste of your time aswell if they (I am guessing it would be more the mother) decided not to have him because of something that was rider error.
I don't know either you or your horse but if he is as good as you make him out to be then they need their heads banging together as they are missing out!!!

You never know, the mother may change her mind. When I was 10 I tried out a little 12.2 Sec A, he hadn't been ridden in years and was a b*gger, bucked me off big time, I landed on my head and was a bit dazed, mum thought I'd broken my neck. I got back on, carried on riding and agreed to have him on loan. Looking back I'm surprised my mum allowed it (he put me on the floor a few times until I got better at preventing the bucking in the first place, there was no way I could sit it).

So mums aren't always traumatised by bad experiences

so sorry to here that brighteyes, not your ponios fault at all - silly PC mothers! always want the best but dont see a good thing when its in front of them! i'm sure you'll find a lovely home for him... if not, ship him my way!!

LOL! I thought the same thing. I normally get on from a wall and have got back from a hack at least 3 times to find a girth dangling nicely below the tum!

was begining to think I was the only one.... I tend to forget about the girth for exactly the same reason high withers etc

Thanks everyone - there is more.... they'd been on him once in the big indoor- no problems (and still no girth tightening
blush.gif
) and when they went outside, a flock of something flew over and spooked a few ponies and one normally staid horse. Cue ours having a small hop and a skip, and the saddle slipping - etc.

I got on immediately afterwards and he was fine - certainly not a galloping off type in any case, but he wasn't even trying to keep a lid on anything

I have since spoken to a few people and it isn't me, or ponio (phew)

and I think the child will get what her mum is happy with - if such a pony exists. I'm happy to have him home or to try again - I have nothing to hide. Thank you everyone for your support. I have racked my brains to see how I could have done it differently, but we got the pony green broke and did everything with him from scratch. We have never had an issue with him. Ah, well!!!!! Fate will sort us out.
