It just had to happen

Can you not put Winston out on loan to a dressage/hunting home (yes, there are some nice owners out there who will look after him) and then turn Snoopy away for a couple of months winter holiday, and then re-rent the stables in Januray when Snoopy can come in and get fit for another season?

I agree with rambo- If you bought the horse as a project- sell it on now, while it is sound, and doing well.
Goodness knows what could happen in the next 6 months. I have made the mistake ( repeatedly) of keeping 'projects' who have subsequently broken or reached their limit competing and been worth less than a 5 / 6yr old ' with potential'.

Totally hear you Rambo.
Thats it, he was to sell.
But Im rubbish at selling because i become attached.
Plus, hes sucha dude and sucha super ride. I will miss that.

I guess I will have to put the advert in HHO this week

buggeration.

I like the idea of perhaps turning him away for the winter? Or do you not think that would do him any good? i know if i turned Archie away he'd come back more opinionated than ever
crazy.gif

He would hate it.
He loves working and loves being around ppl.
The electric fence came down yesterday and Snoopy helped the farm workers put it all back together again.

I do understand believe me...but he's only as good as the next one that comes along....

I'm coming to a decision point with Bo soon. He's in his third year with me now and will be 10 next spring. We don't have the facilities to keep horses indefinitely and I have a lot of money tied up in him. This may well be my last winter competing him
frown.gif
BUT, I would then have the 'fun' of choosing a new 4yo to bring on.......

He may well be like it for a week or so, but you may find that he will chill out. Is it worth a go?

Could you not loan Bertie as a companion? Or, take him back to your parnets to winter out there?

OR - sell the lorry and buy a trailer.................just a thought...

Thats the sort of thing Archie likes doing too

Is there no where Bertie could go to be a companion thats near you? So you wouldnt actually be getting rid of him, just moving him somewhere that wont cost so much? x

I know not a quick fix but how about looking for a new job? I know your close to the horses but it would be worth it if you can keep them. How about a rep for something horsey? Choose your hours etc

i am so sorry to hear this after all the work you have put in.

i also have some big decision making to make, and it is incredibly difficult, and i can understand how easily to get emotionall attached; i am exactly the same

Hi BBs, I am sorry to hear the news as we cant help getting attached even when we know we shouldn`t and we let our hearts rule our heads. I am sure that whatever you decide will be the right decision. I hope you get it sorted.

Oh sweetheart I am so sorry to hear this

I knew as soon as you chose Snoops as your *sell on project* that he had totally stolen your heart and it would be tough to let him go
frown.gif
I cannot think of anything off the top of my head that would help matters, but I agree with Rambo that if one day you ARE going to sell Snoops then you are better off doing it sooner rather than later, however much it hurts

Are you 100% positive you don't want to sell Winston? Seriously, I KNOW he is your horse of a lifetime, but you could find him an amazing dressage home where he would be loved and cherished... Just I think Winst has ended his eventing career and Snoops is just starting his, and you love eventing, so maybe you should be looking to sell the one that isn't going to do the thing you enjoy the most...

You know how much I think of Snoopy - he is an exceptional horse who has a very bright future ahead of him. I can honestly say he is one of the brightest horses I've ever sat on.

I understand your dilemma, and don't have any answers. Just sending hugs and support, for what its worth.

x

(((huge hugs))) I really hope you sort out something other than selling, I know I could never ever sell my Flash, I'd find it easier selling off family members than him! Is there no other yard you could move to that is cheaper? Are you DIY? No other money making ideas? Fingers crossed for you x

QR: BBs, if you really want to keep him then why don't you put Bert down? I know he doesn't cost you as much as the others, but it would lighten the load. You probably think I'm heartless to suggest it, but you will have to at some point anyway, and he's had a fantastic summer since his reprieve. It would be awful if you sold snoop, then suddenly Bert went downhill anyway this winter and you were left with just Winnie. If I had my own place like in the old days I'd happily winter one of them for you, but sadly can't help on that front. Hugs poppet.

oh what a shame buti agree with people above sell the one you dont compete as much and doesnt do what you want !!! i know its hard but you have to do what is right for you xx

cant you find a field witha field shelter for the older one - or send him to a retirement home - that way your parents would be happy he was being looked after x

Aw, Vix that's a shame, but you did buy him to sell on...

I do have to say though, in your position I'd be rehoming Winny - he doesn't do what you want to do but would be a fab dressage schoolmaster for someone. As it is running costs that are the problem, you don't even need to sell him for much....a nominal amount perhaps?

Sorry to read this, remember in the winter at least there are no entry fees ,which cost a fortune. If you want to keep him then just work on him through the winter at home and maybe by next year things will look up but if you planned to sell him on then now may be a good time. Then next spring you can find another project.
We end up keeping them and eventually they are all old!

What sad news V, just when he was going so well.
It's a great shame your parents can't see Bertie would be happy turned out with company rugged and with a field shelter, I can guarantee that because over the years we have had every type of pampered hose imaginable retire here, and the only few that didn't thrive were pure warmbloods (he isn't one is he?).
I wish I could do a questionnaire because I am positive they would all say they prefer their way of life now with freedom, no work and their friends to their former lives.
All you can do is try and make a substantial profit on him; take a look at Exmoor eventing's price list and price him accordingly.. His record shows promise so he needs to be priced to suit that.
Hay and straw is going to be silly money this year and feed will also be going up.
I think many yards will be increasing their charges to cover it.

How horrid, as he is going soooo well for you!!!

I know you said this wasn't a option, and i'm going to make myself sound like a harsh bitch, but Bertie has had a lovely life which can only go down hill from now on, could it not be thought about and then you're mum could take an interest in Snoop instead..

This is exactly what i was trying to say... you'd be even more heartbroken if you sold Snoop, and then Bertie had to go too.. i think you should let Bert go out on a high rather than having to watch him go down hill.. and your mum would have a new interest in Snoop.

I am so sorry V you and the Snoop man are a super partnership and I think that you guys wouldve had some fantastic seasons together. However ( and I know that this is too easy for an outsider to say) that if you really do want to keep Snoops and if you want to event would you think about rehoming both Bertie and Winston. All the top event riders have had to be hard hearted like this early on in their careers.
Toddy sold Southern Comfort his only advanced and Olympic horse at the time. He had no choice and he started afresh with a youngster. Andrew Nicholson did the same thing..Pip sold Midnight Magic... etc the list goes on am sure that nearly all of them have had to make huge sacrifices like that.
Winston WILL be loved by someone else as much as you do,I'll bet you could find him a super loan home especially in your area... as for Bertie, bless him, you've given him the most fantastic retirement what more could a horse ask for.

Think of yourself for once- not the horses. Financial burden is crippling and weighs you down impossibly, imagine if you sell Snoops now and only have the two oldies, and nothing compete- its a depressing thought. I think you need that something to aim for and work towards! Keep Snoops and deal with the other two... then with only having one good horse to be responsible for and to pay for and compete, you'll be on a high.

im inclinced to agree with the others hun, i really really think you should keep him and look at other options for Winnie and Bertie.

Altho this is a lot easier said than done, as i know there is no way on this planet i could even think of selling Blossy......

((((hugs))))) Only you can make the right decision. If you really want to event (which you do) then obviously you should keep Snoops and consider options for the others. I know it's really hard as I am a softie and everyone keeps telling me to get another to progress ( I don't have time) and I WON'T consider selling Corroy so that i that really.

Awwwww no - huge hugs hun, not the Snoopmeister

If you can't think of another solution bar selling him, I might mention it to eventy mate - he's looking for something for next season, is that alright? Can happily give you his name etc

*hugs* im so sorry BBs
frown.gif
You've done great things with Snoops - really loved ready your competition posts and looking at piccies of you two
smile.gif
Fingers crossed for you that something will come up to help you

I sympathise, having gone through a bit of a 'life laundry' phase just recently, forced by rising costs and other factors. Sometimes you just have to make tough decisions and clearly the investment you need to recoup is in Snoopy.

there will be other horses, there always are.

The only thing I would say, is that a friend sold her young horse as couldn't keep 2 and then the old one promptly got colic and had to be PTS

I don't know how old Bertie is, but worth thinking about the what if scenario

If he is a good horse, then find the money - there is eBay and more lucrative working than horses (baby sitting, cleaning, other proper jobs)

Around Glos you can get £15 an hour for cleaning someone's house, or £8 per hour for shovelling sh*t in the cold... humm tough choice... not!
