to stand my mare outside whilst I changed the poultice on her foot. She stood on a nail and has a ruddy great hole that the vet cut in to drain the resultant abcess. She's been on box rest and she's not used to being in so I though it would be lovely for her stand out in the sun. She was really enjoying it until my neighbour's mares started to fight - at which point she squealed and took five big strides over the mud in the "turnout area" which is about 8 inches deep (yuck) and sailed over a five bar gate into the orchard. Flying over the gate after her went the poultice I had been about to remove.

So there she is, prancing round the orchard as if on air, tail straight up and flagged, nostrils wide and snorting and blowing and looking absolutely gorgeous whilst all the mud is being forced up into the hole in her foot. ARRRGGGHHHH!

I've cleaned it as best as I can and repoulticed and I guess we're back to square one.

cor.............. good jumper then

what about tubbing foot, once with hot salty water next time change poultice???

Just spent 40 minutes trying that - she's been SO good until now, but there's no way she's having her foot in a bucket

And yes, we've got big hopes of her jumping

What has worked for me in the past is to continue turning out with the poltice and a protective boot. With the horse moving around freely the area seems to drain and heal much quicker
