We've just got a 9 month old GSP. All was going well and she has been very good (and house trained) until we left her for the first time for half an hour this morning and when we got back she had done 2 poo's and a wee!!

She gets a bit upset if anyone goes out of the room etc. so i'm just wondering if she is getting really worried - hence the poo's or if she is being naughty.

I don't know much about her past but I think they left her a lot and i'm thinking if this is what she does maybe thats why they didn't want her??

What can we do to help her to stop doing this?? We've got to leave her all day tomorrow!

Have you tried leaving the telly or radio on.Our collie used to howl when we left the house. But if he could hear someones voice he soon settled. It wouldent make alot of differance now he is as deaf as a post lol.

Dogs most definately don't think like that - and it's more likely to be down to anxiety.

Build up the length of time you leave her gradually, from 10 mins onwards. Leaving a radio on quitely on a talk station is also a very good idea.

Ok, Well I'll arrange a baby sitter for her for the next couple of weeks and her start of with small periods of being left and we’ll just have to hope she gets more settled and can trust us more. She has become a bit more chilled each day we have had her. It’s annoying because you can’t tell them “I’ll be back in an hour” so they have’nt get a clue when you are coming back!

Oh and will put her the radio on.

Thanks for the advice! xx

when i rehouse my 10mth GSD from Battersea, when I first left him I left the radio on and left him with an old jumper and an old pair of my socks and found that he lies and cuddles them doesn't rip them just sucks them and cuddles them. I think because he could still have a strong smell of me (I don't stink Honest) it helped settle him down. I can leave him for hours now............Another thing he down was have a nibble on some bits of wood eg bottom of stairs.....if you coat any places that he starts to pay interest in with his teeth in VICKS
lets your house smell for a short while but disappears although the dog can still smell it and majority of dogs find it disgusting to taste...................
Good luck

Personally, I would also start small in terms of where she's allowed to roam in the house while you're gone. You could think about a crate, an x-pen or gating off the kitchen. Before you leave for work, get her nice and tired with a good walk, and have a neighbour pop by at lunch to take her out. Once you've established a routine, you can start giving her more freedom in your house.

Do you know if she's barking and showing other signs of separation anxiety?

My grandmother's GSD behaves impeccably... most of the time. If she's left alone in the house for any length of time, she will actually GET ON the furniture and poo... I discovered this by accident once my grandmother went away for a couple of days...
I'm sure it was revenge!!

Dan left her again to come and get me from the train station which took about 40 mins and she hadn't done anything so I'm *hoping* it was just a one off! she was stut in the kitchen but had pushed her way through to the dining room which is a bit of a building site TBH so maybe she thought she was aloud in there?? she doesn't seem to be barking or anything when we get back but she crys when you first leave her.

I'm considering the create idea but i'm not sure - we'll see how it goes.

Thanks everyone!

Star is a pointer not a german shepherd - think she might freeze to death if we left her outside! She even shivers in the house if we don't have a fire!
