Well the final share update...

I asked about financial contributions twice as i'm a student and it's obviously very important, and the potential sharer never mentioned it...

Just got an email saying it's 25 a week, 60 for shoes and then half of wormer. Which i know is reasonable and everyone wants money for shares these days even though they need the help. And when they pay a groom to do what i would be paying to do, as more than willing to muck in with jobs- hell she could sack the groom 3 days a week and i'd do her job. I was willing to pay up to 20 a week.

But it would cost me another 20 a week in petrol and i just can't afford 30 a week on top of that... so i guess it was too good to be true.

Gutted.

Knew i gave up looking for a share for a reason.

Have you tried saying "I can't afford that, but can afford £n"? Sharers are hard to come by, especially good ones! She may just have asked friends for a figure, and would be happy to negotiate?

bloody hell that seems quite a lot! my sharer pays £80 for shoes every 5 weeks and rides 6/7 days a week...but then i would like her to pay a little more but what this person is asking seems a lot to me....

Thanks guys

I suppose for 2 horses it would normally be a good deal. But she has her own livery yard so it's not like she is paying for stabling. It's 30 a week including paying half of the shoes. My post last night was wrong- only 35 for shoes. I did send her an email saying i could afford up to 20 and do any jobs whenever i was there, but she already has a sharer for each of the horses so i guess if they're already paying what i was offered then it would cause trouble with them. I would also feel i was the one paying for her groom etc which just feels unfair to me, but then again it would do, maybe it's just sour grapes.

Bless my OH just offered to make it up... Might leave it and see what she emails back before i take him up on his offer though, as i still feel she might be being a bit cheeky. Or do you reckon it's a good offer for as much riding of 2 dream horses as i want?

A deal is only as good as what you can afford though...

My sharer pays £25 per week and half towards blue chip dynamic (£40 per bag) ever 6 weeks and that is it. She does the horse 7 days a week but she is still on the same yard and my other horse so I help out with morning and evening feeds.

I think she is asking about the right amount if the horses are really good. My mare is a happy hack so can’t compete etc.

I understand why you would feel that you are helping her out but then she is covering all other costs like Vet bills, insurance etc. and although she doesn’t pay livery she still has to maintain then property.

I was thinking of getting a sharer for my horse, I was going to ask just the cost of the shoes, if someone could help me out and ride every day or even most days - I would pay them!

Sounds a bit much consider she doesn't pay livery AND already has someone sharing the horses!!!

I know its hard, but I would walk away!!
When I shared I paid half towards shoeing with one horse, another horse I loaned, his owner didn't want anything as she was just happy he was being worked (she was pregnant). If I had a horse I was sharing I would ask for half towards shoes, worming etc and be happy that said person was working the horse I was unable to..... as that is why most people have sharers... because they do not have time!!!

I always think that people who ask for money for a share are kind of on a sticky wicket, afterall what would they do if they couldn't get a sharer? Pay a groom, pay for full livery, or assisted DIY? That would all cost them, not save them money.

Fair enough if you are covering extra wear on shoes, extra feed and extra insurance, or if the horse would otherwise be turned away at minimal cost but some people seem to want it both ways.

I'm not entirely averse to paying for a share but I think it needs to be within reason and bear in mind the actual financial cost/gain of a sharer. When I have shared in the past it has saved the owner money so I have not paid them anything.

Katt, that's generally what i feel, as when i go to a riding school i pay for instruction, not the ride- but that seems to be how people see it. However, free shares these days are hard to come by, even though i had 2 to help out owners a few years ago, times seem to have changed now. I always said when i saw the ad that if paying someone to do jobs and ride, it's a bit strange to ask someone else to pay up themselves to do the same thing, BUT since this was my absolute dream come true with gorgeous arabs and nice hacking and as much riding as i want, if it came to it i would pay up to 20 a week... Now it's gone down to 20 and Then the 35 for shoes every 6 weeks. OH has offered to pay for shoes so after a chat with him tonight, i might go for it.

All my family keep saying- what you're paying them??! Why aren't they paying you if they need someone? Lol. It's just the way things are now...

Before i came to uni i had the chance to buy the gelding i had spent ages looking after and working on, and would have needed a sharer whilst i was at uni/ working. I would have happily done it for free for the chance to own my favourite lad. In the end though fate took it out of my hands, as i missed out on him by 1 day so it was a moot point.
