this happens almost every weekend here on the pretty piazzas and city streets of Italy. They are called 'Palios' and are tradional so that excuses the carnage. The unfortunate horses are mostly TBs who for one reason or another have come off the track. Fatal injuries are very common and I have seen one who was down with a broken pelvis dragged by ropes onto a truck to be taken to the butcher.
This is what the coloured brochures dont tell you about Italian holidays!

Its a shocking cruelty. Its bad enough to have such a free for all race, let alone not putting horses to sleep on the scene and forcing them to endure a painful journey before slaughter. I despise this flaw in human nature which causes pain and cruelty to other species we share the planet with.

The more people I meet, the more I love my animals.

So what do horse lovers in Italy do to object or improve the lot of these horses? Is there a welfare organisation or forum available to them?

Have petitions been sent to the Italian Government or EU?

What options are there for equine welfare in Italy? Highlighting the cruelty is one aspect taking action is the other.
