this happens almost every weekend here on the pretty piazzas and city streets of Italy. They are called 'Palios' and are tradional so that excuses the carnage. The unfortunate horses are mostly TBs who for one reason or another have come off the track. Fatal injuries are very common and I have seen one who was down with a broken pelvis dragged by ropes onto a truck to be taken to the butcher.
