My horse had dectomax injection on Tuesday and since then he has been noticeably more itchy, stamping his feet and scratching against bushes! I do use frontline as well and have kept things under control for the last two years but this time he is worse than he's ever been. Am I wasting my money with these injections ?

Strange you should say that - my horse had this injection a couple of weeks ago after suffering a massive allergic reaction to something as yet unidentified. I had them give her this injection in case it was mites but she now seems even itchier than before and her hair is falling out by the handful. What symptoms did your horse have initially?

I have used Dectomax on my horses for many years and have never experienced any type of reaction. Sadly, due to resistance, it no longer can be relied on to eradicate mites.

Speak to your vet.

Rayjanie, he has been stamping his feet and biting at his fetlocks. I was advised when I bought him that he suffered with mites so have tried to keep on top of them and not allow him to get to the sores stage. He has the injection twice of three times a year usually.

Dead mites can sometimes cause skin infections, check the skin, if this is the case it is because the Dectomax IS working but you may need some antibiotics.

We have two ponies who've had the jab this year again, one is fine the other no better. She even had a skin scrape that showed nothing,, I still am no wiser but we've clipped her fully (she's a dales x) and have been washing and brushing everyday and using 7 day mud away to soften all the scabs and lumps we found. the dead skin is coming off in bucketloads. Poor girl - I feel really bad that she has been so uncomfortable.

I wonder if all the itching is just the dead dry skin/dead mites coming off now

Hi alma - went back to the vet this morning and have been given some 'spot on' stuff which you apply between the withers. Not even sure she has mites but I can't think of any other explanation. She was also due another injection this week kbut I'm not sure I should give her it now as she's itching all the time. Think I might try a full clip as well and see what's going on underneath the hair she has left!!!! I hope your horse is better, poor thing - have you got any further forward???

If you want to stay away from pharmaceutical chemical stuff ( and this is unlicensed for horses or even mite control in dogs) then may I suggest an old remedy that hasn't failed with my feathered chap who arrived with mites which the old owner said he had always had! Well not any more! Check out this old thread and my post as its too long to repeat!

Thanks - off to see it now :)

You can mix DE into a paste with water and apply it. If you use a puffer bottle ( they supply it in one - the people I use) it helps a bit. Try not to inhale too much!!

Just treated my horse with spot on a couple of days ago. She looks massively happier already and has stopped trying to kill any other horse that is daft enough to come near. Looks promising.
