Hi All,

Ive recently started my Welsh on Protexin Acid Ease for some gut lining support. He’s probably been on it for about a week now - just on a maintenance dose.

I’ve gone out to him this afternoon, and he seems very itchy!

Am I right in thinking this could be the Alfalfa in the Acid Ease causing this?

I didn’t want to take him off it if nobody else had experienced this and or Alfalfa wouldn’t cause itchiness?
Anybody else experienced this?

ps: also aware it’s not ideal weather conditions at the moment being warm/wet.

Although I haven't experienced it I have heard that alfalfa can cause itching. I dont feed it myself but I suppose its possible that it has caused your horse to itch.

If the only thing in your management that has changed is the addition of Acid-ease, it is almost bound to be the cause of the itching. I would stop the AE and monitor the itching carefully. You could give Aloe Vera juice to mitigate the gastric acid, instead.
