Dog been scratching for England recently. Have frontlined and also sprayed house with Indorex twice. No sign of fleas or flea dirt etc on dog. I am wondering if it could be a dry skin condition. He is on a very low fat diet due to pancreatitis and Im wondering if this could be the cause although skin doesn't look flaky! Hes been scratching for about a month now, and Im sure that this time last year he was scratching, Could it be down to coat change for winter ?

Could be any number of things but a simple and cheap remedy might be something like sulphur tablets (available fro a chemist or natural health shop) and rock sulphur which you can get from a pet shop (just leave a lump in the drinking bowl).
Our Border T used to get it, allergic to hay and straw of all things, especially in summer and this would sort him out; vet likens it to cooling the blood as it's a great cleanser. Ben used to get a tablet a day in a bit of cheese but only when he was bad as we didn't want him to become immune to it.

Harvest mites could be a problem at this time of year...my little schnauzer hit a nest of them a month ago...she started scratching her ears ,but I couldn't see what the problem was....then I took a hand lens and looked closely at her ears....I saw minute orange ,pin head sized spots. It was harvest mites...the dog was washed in a pesticide shampoo and sprayed with frontline plus. it has to be frontline plus...the regular frontline doesn't do the trick...

I had a problem with both of mine sometime ago and found that it was fleas even though I couldnt find any sign of them in the home or on the dogs..i hoovered all of the time and sprayed the whole house and dogs bedding...I also frontlined which didn't work so ended up getting tablets (comfortis)from the vet and that did the trick...my vet said that frontline wasn't now so effective as it had been...

Frontline spot on apparently no longer works. Have you had skin scrapes done?

Malseb shampoo (vets) or oat or sulphur shampoo might help. You can get sulphur drops from Amazon. One of mine kept getting hotspots, turned out it was environmental, I changed where I walked him and he was cured. Weird.

Will ask vet about tablets. Have been using frontline, also for horses mites, and it hasn't worked on them either ! I don't think I will go down the shampoo route, dog hates water and getting feet wet, he is so clean I have never had to bath him! I think it must be fleas as when he is out he never scratches. Old dog used to have a flea allergy only had to have one on him and he would scratch madly.

Every August we are driven mad with itching (dog and us) it is when the harvest is brought in and the harvest mites get on the move. I shampooed the dog with a special shampoo the other day but off to the vet on Monday to get some Frontline plus.

If it is harvest mites the frontlineplus spot on isn't going to work..you have to use the frontline plus spray..
You can actually see them if you go into the coat with a flea comb ,against the lie of the hair...look on the ears, especially in the tiny flap on the pinna of the ear...they are like tiny orange pin heads...and boy do they make a dog itch!

Me again...I've bitten the bullet and given both my dogs the new bravecto tablet...seven hours later I've deep brushed and flea combed them both,on a plastic table cloth...I am staggered at the amount of dead, pepper sized ,mites have come off them...I Intend to use this again in late spring when the ticks come back...it really is effective.

Would think its his diet.Omega 3 and 6 are important for skin and hair. I would look into using flaxseed oil( with your vets opinion ) which is rich in this. There is no saturated fats in it .Flax Farm is where I buy it for myself and dog.Their website is very good and helpful. He could be allergic to chemicals in the spray you are using .Liver trouble can also cause scratching.
