Are there many other horses on your yard, do they have any symptoms? If not its unlikely to be an environmental factor.
Could you be using anything different to usual that they are allergic to that none of the other horses come into contact with?
Just thinking out loud.

eczema also causes itchness in horses - ask any human with this horrible condition and they will tell you what it's really like to live with.

my cob has eczema, which is controlled by two injections a year, one every six months. at first we thought he had heel mites, but after exhaustive investigation by my excellent vet, his diagnosis was eczema. now my boy is almost itch-free.

Sometimes you just get this and it's a self limiting thing, eventually their bodies learn how to deal with it and it slowly disappears.
I would feed them plenty of aloe vera which is great for itching, and keep them as cool as possible.
I think you'll find this goes of it's own accord with a week or two, as you appear to have done all the possible treatments already.
If you used powder for lice it may not have worked, we did some of ours four times last year and in the end only flypor? seemed to kill them off.
Before you discount lice use a magnifying glass to look under their forelocks and under their manes, that's where the lice hang out the most!

When I fed my girl anything containing Alfalfa it made her very itchy.

Ditto, when mine ate alfalfa she itched like crazy, was covered in flaky dandruff and came up in bumps all down her sides. Have you investigated the possibility of a food allergy? It would be unusual for both horses to have the same but it's a possibility nonetheless.

Oh my god I think some of you have just found the answer to my horses itching....ALF ALF A

I've done him for lice twice with two different products (despite checking his coat for lice/mites) had his rugs washed, disinfected his grooming brushes etc he doesn't get sweat itch but started panicing think he was going to start with it as he started rubbing his withers/mane etc, but gets this little scabby tiny lumps along his back, sides of his back and just loves you scratching him...never though it could be the Alf Alfa A!!! which I've been feeding him on since winter.
Thought it might be blocked pores from having a rug on all the time.

I'll cut out the Dengie AAA and see what happens.

Thanks guys (even though it was not my original post!)

Might not be of any use to you I know but.....

You said you've done your horse for lice etc but what product did you use?

Only reason I'm saying this is my horse as has the same thing, checked for lice/mites, didn't see any but treated him for it all the same with a louse powerder, cleaned all my rugs, disinfected his grooming equipment, changed his food, bla bla bla and just put it down to having itchy sensetive skin, obviously if it was warmer weather or he was clipped I'd of given him some baths too but was not in the position of doing that, anyway someone recomended Coopers Fly Repellant Plus (which is used to treat itchy skin, mites, lice, sweet itch, flys etc) I did him twice with this in the same week and he's stopped itching his main and sides...could be worth a try thats all.

I ve tried coopers fly repellent and it was the only thing which gave them releif unfortunatly they are still Itching but not so bad how often can i use this product gone through one bottle will get another my vets bill is huge yet they did nothing to help

I have this with my mare. The vets suspect an allergy. I have checked the fields, changed the bedding, feed, washed rugs, swapped rugs, deloused, bathed in hibiscrub etc. There is a feed by Dodson and horrell called equine sensitive which is for allergy horses but expensive this did help a bit. I tried stopping the alfalfa to no avail.......My vet has offered expensive allergy tests but at £500+ Im looking to try everything beforehand. I have the thinnest rugs on in case its an overheating issue....if you get any answers please report back.....Im struggling to find things left to try....
