my big coloured gelding is itchy i have tried various shampoos etc as he gets a bit scurfy.Have tried stop it all products as well as malaseb shampoo. He does have feed allergies but none of these are in his diet obviously.Any ideas???????

try global herbs scratch feed supplement.I used it on an itchy tb and it seemed to work. The powder smells disgusting but my boy wasn't to fussy when it came to eating it.

Itchiness at this time of year is almost certainly lice. Winter is their coming out season! You can get all sorts of louse powders but none of them is very effective. Best bet is Frontline spray worked deep into the back, mane and tail - or anywhere else he's itchy. You have to repeat it after 10 days as nothing touches the eggs and they hatch out after 10 days and re-infest the horse. You'll need to wash rugs, numnahs, grooming kit etc but it's quite easy to get on top of it unless there are other horses with it where the owners don't treat the lice. If your horse associates with them, he can pick them up all over again.
