Hi there, recently i noticed a bald patch on the inside of my horses back leg, i didnt think much of it cos it wasnt that big but now he seems to be getting more bald patches and some are a bit scabby and tender to touch, one of his chestnuts has a hole in it which i have never seen before. I have noticed he seems to be a lot itchier also, i have checked him all over for lice/mites etc and couldnt see a thing but maybe possibly thats what the problem is? Im just wondering if anyone can suggest the best thing to do with it? Will be getting a vet out if it gets any worse, and help on this would be greatly appreciated. new to this and not to sure how to upload an image to show!

It does sound like lice, they are not always easy to see with the naked eye! My made had a similar problem around Christmas time. The most visible sign was very scurfy skin, along with the itching and hair loss. I treated her withSpot On and then Cooper s Fly Repellent Plus to finish off any of the little beggar s that were left in her feathers.

You won't see mites except under a microscope. Get some sellotape and stick it onto the bald patches. Press hard then put that onto a microscope slide, take it to the vets abd ask them to look at it under a microscope.
If they see mites you'll probably need dectomax injections to get rid.
My tb was self harming horrendously and this is what he had. Chorioptes mites.
