Hi,

We have a 4 year old Cairn Terrier that we took on last year since he had been abandoned.
Last year had him at the vet for his itching during Summer months, and after various expensive tests, they said he was allergic to dust!

He does not itch during winter months, but come Summer he is constantly in at his toes and does this sort of fly catching thing in the air, he is on Pirotron since vet thought it may now be a summer type allergy, and have also tried aloe vera, but understand from talking to people in park with terriers that they can suffer from skin conditions.

We do get him clipped and he is bathed using Malaseb shampoo, but wonder if anyone else has any ideas?

Try sulphur tablets, they work wonders for our Border Terrier who is allergic to hay, straw and pollen! You can get them over the counter at any chemist or health shop. You can also get rock sulphur from a pet shop which you can leave in the water bowl. I only use them when needed, don't do it continually as I don't want him becoming immune to them. He has one tablet a day wrapped in cheese when necessary.

We find the type of food generally has a huge part to play in allergies. For a dog with skin problems, it is often gluten which makes the problem worse. I would advise trying a very high quality dog food for at least a month, the only ones I know of to be completely gluten free are Arden Grange and Oscars. Alternatively try BARF for your dog. No treats/ends of toast etc for the trial period. If changing the food works (and in my experience it generally does!) your little dog will be a lot happier! PM me if you like.
