I've had my dog a couple of weeks now and he seems fine. Still a little restless at times and on the odd occasion I do leave him he barks a little. There is only one thing really that I desperatly need to sort out and that is his itching. I noticed when I got him that he scratched a lot and had a few scabby patched at the base of his tail and between his legs so took him to vets where the vet flee treated him and said it could be more down to stress as he has no flees. It got worse so was given Maliseb (sp) a shampoo to help settle it. Have been using this but its still getting worse base of tail is very scabby and he spends most of his time scratching then yelping where he has made it sore. Someone told me to give him piriton but wasn't sure if this would help / was ok to do. Any advice or suggestions to help much appreciated
 
He is actually on Nature Diet which has no extras in it anyway no wheat no addidtives / preservatives and I give him JWB hypoallergenic treats anyway.
 
Get your vet to do a scrape for mites, you can't see them with the naked eye so you need to look under a microscope. Allergy diet, Burns is an excellent food, and NO scraps or treats inbetween, must be 100% allergy food. If its really bad vet should give him a steroid injection which will ease it.

Itchy skin is one of the hardest and most expensive problems to treat (loads & loads of vet trips). You can help by eliminating all irritants at home, no shake & vac on carpet, bed watched in non-bio & no fabric softener & only shampoo in Melasab and especially feeding an allergy diet, most modern dog foods are just processed c**p & chemicals!

sounds suspiciously like a flea allergy to me - the base of the tail is a classic area for this to show up - I would frontline him just in case ( and don't forget to treat his bedding as well

Thats what I think. He was flee treated 2 x weeks ago and as I have only had him 2 weeks all bedding etc was brand new. Hopwfully it wil start to clear up soon. Trouble is once its sore its a vicous circle.
 
try aloe vera gel to soothe any soreness or good old Bob Martins coal Tar ointment - smells a bit but is really effective.
