My new dog from the rescue centre arrived yesterday. She was treated with frontline and a wormer by the centre's vet 4 days ago - but is scratching like mad, mostly her legs and is chewing at her feet. She is also biting at her rear end. I've given her a bath today in a flea shampoo but it hasnt made a difference. I cant see any evidence of fleas or scurviness in her coat at all. Does anyone have any ideas? She's a cairn/cairn cross if that helps.

It's not always parasites. If she's been in kennels it might just be a bad habit.

What food is she on?

Rule out all sorts of allergies - food, pollen, bedding, chemicals (floor cleaners etc)

If you can, feed her something neutral, keep her in a neutral space for a couple of weeks to see if she improves.

Hope this isn't the reason she was abandoned :(

Me too! Her coat looks fine and there are no bald patches. Her skin also looks fine and isnt red or scaly. I'm hoping its nothing and will resolve itself now she is in a home. I'll book her in for a haircut as soon as my groomer has a slot and see if she has any advice.

Our Goldie starts to chew her feet when she goes in kennels (she is no longer being kenneled after the state she left in last time - it had gone unnoticed by the kennel staff!!) and it starts as a stress response - then as it gets sorer, and more itchy, she carries on, then it becomes a habit etc.
The vets may give her steroids purely to stop it itching therefore breaking the habit.
As CC said (we both have itchy dogs!) rule out any allergies, try to stick to non fragranced sensitive skin stuff to wash any bedding etc in.
Hopefully, it will be cleared up in a few weeks! :)

ETA - you may want to get some special shampoo (we use Malaseb) for the groomers too.
