We have a 10yo mini longhaired dachshund and over the years his coat has got thicker and thicker, to the point he is clipped year round. He's much more energetic with his coat off but he does scratch a lot. We've tried a few things from the vet to no avail. He's bathed after his clip, and I wash him down after going in long grass as the vet suspects some kind of allergy. He's fed on raw, plus occasional eggs and rice, and regular fish in oil to try and improve his skin, which can be a bit scurfy. He gets those horrible red patches in his paws and underarms though and the prescription cream doesn't really help.

Anyone have any suggestions?

My Parson Russell scratched herself sore and made her feet a right mess with constant biting at them. I did the wash off after going out with no improvement. she's now permanently on apoquel, it had an immediate effect on the itching. Not really what I wanted but it works where nothing else did.

Has your dog been cushings tested, just thinking about his thick coat, I don't know if dogs do the same as horses with hair growth though.

I would try a single protein raw diet with no egg for a little bit just to rule out food allergy. We used to have an itchy GSD and raw greatly improved but it was even better when we then used less different meats. If I remember correctly chicken was one of the meats that made him a bit more itchy. He was also sick with fish.

We also used to give him portion in the spring pollen season as this also really helped: so he seemed to have both food and environment allergies!

Yumega itchy has worked on my jrt, at first I thought I had wasted my money until it clicked in week 5 I ran out and thought salmon oil would help because I wasn’t convinced it was that good. Boy didn’t I know about it scampi went straight back to chewing constantly he’s now back on it and will never come off it. It does take time though to get into the system x
