Hi all

has anyone ever had a neddy with ear mites or any kind of bacterial infection in the ears? My mare has recently become very sensitive about having her ears touched and has begun to shake her hear side to side as if she is trying to shake something out of her ears. I managed to have a good look inside them today and there seem to be little scabs with tiny flecks of blood on the inside of her outer ear. Having worked as a vet nurse it looked similar to when dogs/cats have ear mites. Her ears are obviously very itchy. I intend to have the vet out next week to look at it. Any ideas/experiences in the meantime are much appreciated. Thanks!

Whatever it turns out to be its possible its either catching or environmental because when i brought Daisy in today she just stood scratching her left ear against her hay net rather than eating it and flapping her head up and down. She's never done it before and it was very odd. Could it be some kind of bug that has been brought out by the warm wet weather?

These symptoms are the same as two ponies on my yard, one last summer one this, and ear mites were the problem.

I believe they were treated with a mild dilute of insecticidal (sp) shampoo. After this they were checked everyday and I believe the owner puts some fly spray on a sponge and then round the ears - have had no repeat in either situtation.

These two ponios shared grazing with others but none of them were affected!

My Vet advised me to use Switch when my mare started headshaking and ear scratching, in case she had ear mites. Small amount on cotton wool applied to inside of ear, repeated after 3 weeks.
