Itchy Eyes

My boy often has itchy eyes, especially in the summer when wearing a fly mask. I think his eyes are very sensitive. He is allergic to hay (causes coughing and chest irritation) so his itchy eyes might be a result of allergies too, but I'm not certain. I think this is an ongoing problem rather than an infection, but again not 100% sure.

Recently he's been coming in from the field with his face covered in mud, and I am almost certain that the main reason why is because he has very itchy eyes. He is always desperate for a rub in order to scratch his eyes - both using the ground, and me!

Any ideas as to what I can do for him, preferably something soothing? Someone recommended that I use tea bags on his eyes, and others have suggested eye drops.
 
Hi have you ever tried the vetericyn eye wash? Worth a try on a symptomatic level at least if this is a recurring problem. We have had good results with it.

Please check the vet before self medication. We have a livery here who kept using tea bags etc, we told them (an my mare had ulcers and uveitis) to please get the vet, finally they did and he had very bad ulcers and ended up in the vet hospital for 3 months nearly. My first mare went 80% blind with moonblindness. Don't mess about with eyes as once the vision starts going it wont get back.

I agree eyes are not something to risk, I lost one last year who had a nasty inflamed eye, the vet who came to see him said she normally would recommend using cold tea but this was an extremely nasty case and she was pleased I had got her out quickly, sadly it proved to be a growth behind the eye causing him to rub and although he initially responded well to treatment when it flared up again the prognosis was not good so we decided that it was best to call it a day.

I would always get a vet to check if a horse was having any bother with an eye, the wrong treatment can do more harm and for the sake of one vets bill it could possibly be sorted out quickly.

I've already booked the vet for friday, but wanted to do a bit of research and hear some examples in the mean time!

Oh gosh HGA-12 eye ulcers sound very painful, poor soul! and be positive how sad! I really feel for you, but sounds like you made the best decision. Heres hoping theres nothing as serious with my chap.
