Hi

A few friends at the yard have recommended that i use the above on my mares itchy feathers. It says on the box that its very poisonous for cats and the lady in the shop seemed concerned that i was using it on my horse. Can anyone advise as the lady in the shop has got me worried, it was just a small pet shop. Thanks

Considering that bob martin products have been linked to fitting in some dogs, I wouldnt be using it.

For feathers how about a good medicated shampoo/ hibiscrub bath with lots of pig oil and suplhur and camrosa on the patches where you can see mites.

I always had frontline spray recommended to me however i have to have a friend lie and say it was for his cats as it requires a prescription and the vet looked astonished when i said it was for a horse with mites!

A horse is a lot a bigger than a dog or a cat, so it may not cause such adverse side effects. For mite pig oil doesn't really do anything I find, clipping them off and cleaning with medicated shampoo and then putting on mite powder for horses seems to help.
Pig oil however is very good for keeping the area moisturised so you don't get that scabby flaky skin.

I agree with DOMINOBROWN. My vet gave me a medicated shampoo which has to be left on for 10 mins. Then I have used mite powder - in fact DE which is diatomaceous earth check out Google for suppliers- wonderful stuff that can be used internally against worms and externally for mites on horses and dogs. I have not had to clip out my horse's feather to do this either. I have found that the veterinary shampoo is identical to Selsun shampoo for Dandruff. You can get a bottle from the chemist for about £4 and it has to be diluted 1:10 so it lasts. And the DE is cheap and easy to apply which I do about once a month. No mites on my horse now, thank goodness!

I wouldnt use this product as both my dogs had an awful reaction to it and my vet strongly advises against this product for any animal...so my honest opinion is please try to avoid as much as you can.:)

If your horse is very itchy from mites you may need to treat these before you get good results from pig oil & sulphur. The two most effective treatments for a bad dose are either frontline spray or dectomax injections. I think you need to clip the feathers off if you are using the spray. After that regular use of PO&S should kkep them at bay, but it does have top be regular. If you PM Theresa_F she is PO&S guru & has a full set of instruction for maintaining hairy legs that she sends out.

The only things that work are either frontline spray but you need to clip the feathers off or dectomax injections.

If your horse has sores you'll need to clip feathers off anyway so you can treat them properley and you may need to get antibiotics/pain meds also xx

I used it on itching dog a couple of weeks ago and he is still here. I think there have been cases but am guessing its probably rare? I did read this and I think cats are more susceptible than the dogs. I have thought about using it on my horse as other owners have recommended it to me.

Trimming the feathers so they are off ground and my local pharmacy would order me big bottles of mite solutions benzyl benzoate and I would slather this over his feathers and really work it in right down to the skin. A couple of days later I would use something ie moisturising to stop the mites clinging to hair. You might have to repeat this and if the horse is out the feathers will pick up dirt etc too.

I would use frontline on such big beasties I think the thing with cats/dogs etc is they apply it on back neck etc so they cant lick it off.

Hibiscrub shampood in ,is good if the mite bore holes weep and start looking crusty(by this stage horse might be stamping their feet).
