My PR takes apoquel as she has skin allergies (mainly meat!) but has been chewing her feet alot recently. A friend's terrier, also on the same med, was given a (steroid?) spray for his itchy feet - Anyone else with the same prob? I will take her to the vet but would be interested to hear other experiences and meds prescribed. Many thanks!

It could be either allergy related, pain related or just a habit! My PR is a terrible licker and be smallest scratch can turn into a full on sore because of it.

I wonder if it's a breed characteristic? Ours could lick for Britain! Spends a lot of time licking his front legs and paws especially.

Harvest mites are very common this time of year, have a good look between her toes, they are tiny little things.

Also look at diet. Daisy is on a gluten, rice and pea starch (and potato starch) free food which has helped hugely with foot chewing. I also add coconut oil to her food.

Are harvest mites visible to the naked eye, and what is the treatment please? With regard to the other kind people who mentioned diet she has been allergy tested and we know she's allergic to most meats inc chicken and rice. Her diet is mainly fish/potote based with a few cheesy treats. I agree with everyone that it's probably a terrier thing too. I know there is a spray available from the vet, and that's my next port of call! Thank you everyone..chewing feet seems common!

They are yes, but just, the skin looks sore. It used to be frontline, when we had a terrier that got them, you spray it right on the feet. Treatment may have changed, though.

My vet said sadly the white terriers are just like people with ginger hair very sensitive skin. Mine is constricting or nibbling something it drives me and him mad. I've been washing him in manuka honey shampoo that seems to be helping heaps also on grain free food. If he's really bad I get him injected every 8 weeks or piriton tablets x

That's very interesting as she's 90% white of course. Our horse vet is very keen on manuka honey as a remedy, I'll def try the shampoo. I'm glad you find the licking/chewing annnoying, I do too and feel very mean! The daily apoquel tablet should be stopping the itching..I just wonder if it's doing anything at all?! Thanks for your input.

Maybe she needs to break the cycle? I put the cone of shame on one of mine at one point, he'd had an injury then got into the habit of licking, drove me nuts. I broke the habit after three days.

Mine cost me a small fortune at the vets to try and find the cause if her sore patch on her leg (50p size that had started with tiny scratch). In the end I cured it by her wearing a baby size long sleeve vest at all times and washing her leg every other day with Double K Furst Aid shampoo whichmis coal tar based. It took a couple of weeks.

I too put the buster collar on from time to time when I go out to try and break the cycle. Mine has actually had his anal glands out as I had to empty them quite often. I use the johnsons manuka honey shampoo x
