My new horse is very itchy. He's fully clipped but I do know he gets hivey when hot so we're very careful not to over-rug,. Have removed alfalfa from diet and he's currently on a plain chaff (Thunderbrooks). Has anyone had any success with a supplement to help sooth itching? He's itchy all over torso, head and upper limbs and will use anything and everything as a scratching post, he 'runs' up and down stable walls trying to get some respite, interestingly and luckily he doesn't touch (his thick and luscious) mane and tail. Oddly he doesn't seem to enjoy being groomed either - have tried very soft real hair body brushes and stiffer bristles in case he wants scratchy - he enjoys neither atm!
Many thanks

Think you might need to give him a good check over for passengers - lice or mites. Quite possible he has clipper rash - any dog groomers on here will recognise the symptoms Do the itchy patches occur where he has been clipped? Has your rug been washed in anything he could react to? Antihistamines might be your best bet to calm things down.

I supplement mine with niacinamide in the summer months I just buy the powder and add water then feed 20mls a day.

Alternatively I used to feed herd leader oral itch solution which is niacinamide but already made up.
