Help!! my pony is always itchy in winter but i have him on an itch free supplament(sp?) which helps but he has just started itching really badly and his shoulders are now scabby and partly bald from where he has scratched them so much (only took about 1 day)!!!

I think that the itching could be because he is fully clipped and where he has started moulting it it irritating him. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to a) stop him itching and b) to get his coat to grow back as fast as possiable

de lice him, if no diff after i wud get vet out to see him.
Has the rug been washed recently ? cud be the washing stuff used, maybe allergic to the rug fabric ? dunno , just clutching at straws!!

What are you feeding him? Mine was very itchy til I stopped giving her anything with alfalfa in. Could you put him on a very simple diet of something like Readigrass for a while to see if he improves? Then introduce other foods gradually and note what makes him itch.

My horse has been very itchy since the end of January so I took him off the alpha -oil. He has been quite a bit better since. I don't think the alfafa suited him.

This makes a lot of sense to me - I put mine on alfa-beet about a month ago as her usual oats-and-chaff diet wasn't quite enough as she was in a lot of hard work. Recently she's had a few little bumps come up on her belly and she seems desperately itchy. Might be the alfalfa! Will go back to straight sugar beet instead and see what happens.

The problem is that I don't think anything has changed his feed is the same and his rug was washed quite a bit before he started itching so isn't dirty but if it was the washing powder then it would have started earlier. Also he only itches in winter I don't think that it is goint to be sweet itch. does anybody have any ideas how to get the coat to grow back quickly. Thanks for all ideas

Unusual as he's clipped, but I wouldn't entirely discount lice... Especially as you mention it's a winter phenomenon. I've had same problem with one of mine this winter. Started itching in same areas as yours. Doubted it was lice as he wasn't rubbing mane or tail and an initial inspection didn't show any signs of life in his coat but a couple of months later it was another story. I was shocked because he's very well looked after and groomed daily. His rugs are washed every couple of weeks (we use rubber mats... need I say more) and none of my other horses were suffering similarly (although they've all been treated regardless.) I've used Deosect twice now (2 weekly intervals inbetween treatments), plus louse powder inside his rugs and he's a new boy now. Stopped itching and has a lovely summer coat is coming through.

Numerous people have told me the lice must have come from either his hay or straw. Dunno how much truth there is in that, though. How long can a louse live in a bale of hay or straw I wonder...... ?

cornucresine is good for hair growth but id make sure the scand were gone first so your not putting it on broken skin, my friend has a very itchy pony and has added biotin and garlic to her feeds which seems to helping.
